The 911 doesn't have anything on the 944, or 928. Maybe a 935, but as far as 80's 911's go, I'd opt for a 928 every time. I was at another shop once, and this 935 owner told me he had always thought of the 928 as an old grandpa Porsche.
I said, "I'll take that from you, but only a 935 owner can say that to me."
The 944/951 will outhandle both the 911 and 928, but it doesn't have the refinement of the 928. The 928 is not far behind on handling and I'm willing to trade a little bit of handling for the refinement and power of the 928. The 911 of the 1980's was just old technology with more displacement. I love my 911 too, but it represents the best of technology from that era. I think the 928 represents the best of Porsche technology for the 1980's. I mean, other than a 959 or a 935, but who can afford that? Not me.

You would be surprised how many people could spend that on a car, just in THIS country, and not even flinch, or be forced to eat mac and cheese for the rest of their lives. Knowing there is nearly a million dollar's worth of new addition in their garage isn't that big of a deal, because there are probably several others of like ilk in there as well. Most think of 800+K for a car, and imagine, "wow! We could buy a great house, or even a mansion (depending on the 'hood) with that!" To folks with such resources, it's just another special car to add to the collection.

It's a safe assumption that there are probably more than a few people who would wonder how it's possible for 924carerra to have a

1984 Porsche 928 S Chiffon White orig paint/burgandy
1986 Porsche 944 Guards red/linen
1970 Porsche 911T Black/Black

It's all relative.......

I'm just lucky, and in the state I live in there are only a handful of people that can work on Porsches. That leaves a ton of old cars broken and dirt cheap. Just don't expect to find a Chevelle or a Mustang fastback here because rednecks can fix those and therefore they are expensive.

Yes, there are plenty of people here in the USA who can easily buy a 918. The average person has no concept of how the rich live and where they live. Just go to places like Aspen or Vail Colorado. These are all for the most part the second, third, or fifth homes and used maybe a month a year! I saw John Denver driving his black 928 down frontage road in Vail back in 1982.

Don't sweat it dude. We weren't all born with silver spoons in our mouths. Some of us had to work hard for what we have. Or in my case work on what I have. All of my cars were bought in a deplorable nonrunning state except one and it's no concours piece either.

It's possible to have an inordinate amount of fun with the 928 and/or 944 for very little money.

Mine aren't great, they were cheap, they sit outside, not worth enough money to even carry comprehensive insurance on them. Cheap transport, just the right amount of power, great handling.

Once you get them reliable (takes some patience), turn off the money faucet and drive. Wife and I've put 100,000 miles on sharks in the last 5 years.

Screw the cosmetics, radios, wheels and 10 inch wide rear tires. Drive.

Let others be curators, racers, concours polishers, whatever they want to be and want to invest. I support them.

My game is cheap buy, cheap but reaonably correct repairs, fun transport, great technical collaboration and puzzle fitting, no car payment. So on one level its about me enjoying beating the system, helping others do the same, and not about any given car and its perfectness.

That's totally my game too. I buy super cheap, fix the car to a reliable state, and then drive the pee out of it. If I roll a car and tear it all to pieces so be it. It was worth it in experience and I'm not out over a thousand dollars or so. Maybe $2k at the most. I'm about to buy another '84 928 for $500! I might roll it. I haven't rolled one yet, but who knows?
Whatever I do you can rest assured that I will be debt free and have no car payments.
