14 pin connector broken

After removing to clean a couple times the connector on both male and female sides have cracked and fallen apart in my hands. I have checked with a couple suppliers and they are over $40 a side. Just too much for a plastic connector. I am thinking about using separate connectors and layers of shrink wrap....or just solder all of them together permanently .

Has anyone done this??? I don't see a problem with it and if made weather tight...may solve the corrosion issue.

I am NOT paying $90 for a new plastic connector.

I asked about creating a different type of connector, early on, and did not get really good feedback. Seems like something better could be made.....

By the time you get done trying to change out the connector you might be better off spending the $90 and replace with stock.

how about using GM weatherpack connectors...you could get enough of them to make every connection different and it is readily available. You might even find one with 14 pins on a wrecked GM vehicle. Try the main engine wiring harness connection.

I am going to try using Delphi weatherpack connectors. They are TRUELY water tight, vibration and heat resistant. 2 6-pin connectors are $14.00 ( 3 pins not used on a 1982 model )... Hopefully no need to clean every year too. I may retro fit ALL the under hood connections with these as other are falling apart in my hand.

Dean, I believe Carl at 928 motorsports can rebuild an entire harness, if you wanted to spend that much.

You can omit the connector and solder the wires directly, too.

The only time it comes apart, anyway, is to clean the damn thing.

So now you are one those POs that everybody can complain about and curse for not correcting the problem but instead adding to a later-down-the-road problem.

Most of the connections there can use a simple regular weatherpak - the starter connection (yellow) cannot - it need a bigger connector than the rest - it carries a significant current!

Permanently soldered wiring is a real issue if the engine ever needs to come out...? Why do that - these connectors are cheap and easy to use.

Isn't the 14 pin used in some other location?

Not a place I would attempt to save money on.
