Timing belt replacement woes

1980 Euro
I'm having trouble finding timing marks on the cam sprockets. I see some etched lines, but they don't jive with each other or the back cover. The harmonic balancer is light blue, so apparently not original. It has regular timing marks up to 35 BTDC, but then has a pronounced stamped line (like with a chisel) about 45 deg ATDC. This is where the left cam sprockets appears to line up some marks, best as I can tell. I know your supposed to change at 45 deg BTDC, but wonder if 45 ATDC would be the same?! I suppose you can change the belt anywhere as long as the sprockets don't move?!
What say ye?

the marks on my 84 cam sprockets were very hard to see - they are a very slight V in one of the "valleys" on the sprocket on the cam cover side - they line up with a plastic tab on the rear part of the timing cover - line up the crank with TDC and look close - if I remember they are both towards the left side (that's with you standing if front of car) when at TDC - marking them when you find them makes it easier for us guys with old eyes in the future

My 80 had small Circle's on the timing Gear's with the Pulley at TO or OT I forget Top Dead center in and case .
When you back off the tensioner / Belt , the Cam well turn , Mostly the ,Pass side Cam.
So be prepared to Turn it back during assembly . Helper is in Order .
Yes the V Marks on the Motor plate are sometimes hard to see .
A dab of paint on Gear and Plate is helpful

post a picture of the damper marks,
yours could be backwards.

NOTE while facing the engine you should be able to read the markings

This picture shows a 32 valve damper set to 45 BTDC

NOTE the other quick way to tell where the crank is set is to observe the key way .
while looking at the engine,
the key way pointing to 3 O clock indicates 45 BTDC,
and 4 O clock is TDC

NOTE while facing the engine you should be able to read the markings
