Finally got around to the 928 after finishing the Vette.
Pulled the intake manifold. ![]() I noticed #1 was missing it's injector when I got the car. This is what I saw. ![]() But it cleaned up not so bad. I'll put some carb cleaner in next. ![]() Anyone know how to bypass the oil cooler? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Took the valve covers off today to oil the cams and clean the covers. Tomorrow paint and reinstall the intake manifold remove the spark plugs to clean the holes. Lots and lots of

Surprised the valves look rusty like that.

One injector was missing. When I pulled the intake manifold I found something the looked like tissue paper which seems to leak the rust onto the valve. I could similar substance in some of the spark plug holes. I don't see a waterline so I guess the car sat outside without its hood for some time.

Pulled the plugs. They were a rusted mess. Won't even show them. Put oil in all cylinders put the tbelt on. The motor won't complete a revolution. It stops before 45degrees. I put a magnet in all the cylinders but nothing came out. Which one should I focus on?

If the plugs were that rusted the cylinder bores are possibly iffy. There may be a ridge preventing free rotation.
Get other opinions but I'd let several applications of oil soak the bores and then gently try again.

i'd first make absolutely sure you have the timing marks lined up correctly - you could be tapping the pistons against the valves - if the marks are on then i'd look at that #1 cylinder - who knows what might have fallen down that open injector port and got through the open valve - might not be metal so magnet won't find it - find one of those scopes that you can send down the spark plug hole and have a look inside the cylinders - some car parts stores will lend them to you here in the u.s. - and as tdskip said keep adding a bit of oil to cylinders - might dissolve some accumulated junk - and i think you can just route the oil cooler line back into itself to bypass the cooler

Thanks for the input. I'll do the soak and check again. I ran out of daylight yesterday. I don't think anything got past the rusted spark plugs because the treads were rust free and they came out the normally. It feels like something metal. I can hear a slight clang. Which cylinder will be highest before 45degrees?

Check the timing! Don't try force anything.

i was thinking something might have dropped down the open #1 fuel injector hole and from there it could have slipped past the intake valve - but from what you described of the noise it sounds like the piston hitting the valve - check the timing marks again - do you know why the car was sitting as it was? - could it have suffered a broken timing belt? - if so the valves could be bent so there would be no way to turn the engine now - i'm not sure about the 32 valve engines but on the 16 valve ones the cam timing marks are sort of hard to see on the back side of the cam pulleys - +1 ^ don't force it

Good knows what injustices this car suffered. Think I might as well pull the heads. I'm more thank half way there anyway.

And here is what happens when some one chooses not to pull out the screw they dropped in....seller claimed "bad head gasket". Fortunately I didn't pay much for the car, but this was most unplesant. Car had 68,000 miles on the ODO
