Looking for 1988 5.0l engine

I am new to the Porsche world. I just purchased a 1988 S4 with a bad engine. I am looking for a replacement. I have worked a lot on Saab's and now looking forward to the switch. Thanks.

I have just finished repairing the same animal. I used an earlier 5.0 shortblock I had and replaced all the innards, heads, everything with the best of the two parts selections. It was an early stud engine, but I went with what I had on hand. Due to the earlier block the later starter bracket does not fit and neither does the flywheel. I used the block's starter bracket and flywheel. The other parts are pretty much interchangeable.

I, too am in N.C.

Thanks for the information. It has been hard to find one that they do not want a fortune. I am in the Weddington area.

I considered an LS3 which would lighten the car by about 200lbs. on the front end, but my son wanted to get the shortblock we had out of the basement and keep it pursang, so we went that route. Just a few more things to hook back up and one of them is the battery, then turning that key!! I am on Old Hwy 16 near "Lowesville". Don't know of any cheap complete engines, but I assume yours has the seized crankshaft/thrust bearing disease?

Supposed to be from a very well maintained 88 auto. Car had a small fire, which was put out very quickly with no damage to the engine (beyond some melted goo that dripped on it here and there and could be cleaned off). It is still on the pallet. I bought it for a project, and it looks like I wont need it very long. I need to take some measurements from it and make a CAD model, but it could be fair game after that.

Thanks,
Hnas
