Porsche Crest Project 951 (Pictures Added!)

Picked up a 1986 951 out of Florida the other day ($1500.00) with a "locked" motor. It arrived at my house and I started tearing it down. I got the head off in short order and found

1. Trashed Injectors and brittle wiring harness
2. #2 Piston has ruined its cylinder wall
3. Exhaust and turbo full of antifreeze

She is in sad shape so I am going to begin her restore at once. Doesnt look like the block will be usable the number 2 cylinder is pretty torn up. I guess Ill find a block and build it up. It was strange some of the cylinder head nuts were so loose I unscrewed them with my fingers, never seen that before. The head seems to be ok but Ill send it off to Lindsey Racing with the crank and oil pan to get it checked and tricked out.

Everything else looks like you would expect a poor;ly maintaned 1986 951 to look like but the body is very straight and the car is complete.

I will get some pictures posted for anyone who wants to follow my progress, sure if fun to get started on one again.

I will probably have a 944 turbo short block for sale fairly soon (turbo). It also had a "locked up" engine, but the cylinder walls/pistons appear fine. I expect to run into another internal problem but you may be able to swap some parts, etc. Let me know if you're interested...

Good luck with this endavor, is it your first 944 turbo?

The new (used) motor arrived Tuesday night and by Wednesday midday I had it torn down to the bare block. The block looks good but amazingly enough rod bearing number 2 is shot! It is amazing that Porsche never recalled these engines due to this failure, it seems to be the same thing on everyone of them I tear down. All in all the new block, crank, and pistons are in very usable condition. I think I am going to build a website to detail this project with pictures so stay tuned......

Looks like both the cranks I have have damage to the #2 rod journals so I am going to send one of them out to be turned, lightened, and cross drilled. Here is a list of the things to be fixed I have found to date -

Injector wiring harness dry and brittle needs replacing
Injectors are shot and I will replace with 55lbs injectors
AC adjuster bar is broken (I might can weld this)
Heater core shot
Power steering rack and pump will need to be rebuilt
AC compressor is locked up
Various bushings damaged by long term power steering fluid and oil exsposure.
The head is warped and the heat insulation coating in the exhaust ports is breaking up and missing chunks in places so I will have to buy a new head for the car.

I am begining to think this car was massively overheated. I can also see its never had any seal work done on it as every seal on the old motor is pouring oil. I am sure this contributed to this motors early demiss.

I still havent taken any pictures of the project but I will soon. I got the new/used block back from the machine shop where they boiled it in cleaner and it looks great. I am coating the block with a spray on ceramic 1200 degree finish that looks like aluminum when it cures. It really looks sweet!

I will report in as I get further along................

So you are thinking of just doing rod bearing and not mains? Take a look at this main bearing from a 90,000 mile motor. Not to good!

Nize I found the cermic spray coating here in Columbia for $5.00 a can. Once the engine is painted with the coating it must be baked for a few hours so you will need a big oven. Ill get the product details for you tonight and post them.

That is just UGLY.

So number 2 rod bearing spun. Someone decided driving it around with a nasty knock would be a smart thing etc.etc.etc.

That crank looks nasty I am not sure if you will be able to salvage it.

You have lots of work ahead.

Have fun!
