993 Conundrum
I have a 95 993 that I bought 3 years ago as a one owner car with 65K miles. I have driven it on weekends mostly and have added about 1k a year. I don't take it on hour long drives, long distances or to the track. I feel guilty about putting miles on the car. I looove the car and it feels like special treat when I drive it. HOWEVER, I like to drive a lot. I race a vintage 911 in PCA and I have a 73 Targa, so I have a couple of bases covered. 1. Should I keep it stock and drive it about 1k a year? 2. Upgrade suspension and maybe a couple of other things and drive it without worrying about the miles I put on ( would be about 5k a year ). 3. Sell it and buy a higher mileage car with some mods. I would take it to the track a couple of times a year.

You only live once, go have some fun with it!!!!
I put around 10K miles a year on my 911 sc, last month I picked up a 2004 gt2 with 25K miles, I've already added 2500 miles to it. A beautiful drive from AZ to Colorado and a handful of mountain runs with friends. I never understood eating all the expenses of car ownership if all you do is park it in a garage. that's just my 2 cents

I also have a '95 993, such a wonderful driving car. I bought it with 85,000 miles and it now has about 112,000 miles. I hope to put as many miles as I can on it.
You may have heard about the 993 owner who put over 300,000 miles in his car (he was featured in Panorama). A guy like that gets far more enjoyment out of his car than the guy who keeps a car tucked away and not driven. When you're really old and the car is long gone, which ownership scenario will make you glad you owned the car - having put 100,000+ miles on the car (with all the memories attached), or having it kept under a cover in the garage? It's not a '73 RS - drive it.

The cost per mile goes down the more you use it. Deprecation from mileage used is the lowest factor in ownership as well. Heck you may never harvest the returns on the sale itself if one of life’s many boogeymen bites you in the ass. So then WTF, enjoy!

I googled the 300,000 mile car and the same mechanic (Wayne) serviced my car for the 1st owner! I thought about selling and buying a higher mileage car, but the difference in what I paid and a higher mileage car is only about 10K, so not worth it. I guess one consideration is to keep it low mileage was to pass a decent car to the kids. I bought this as a gift to myself after reaching a life milestone so I guess yes I'll keep it and drive it more! Coronavirus is certainly putting some things into perspective! @Levi--how's driving a 3.6 in an SC? My race car is an SC and was thinking of moving up to a 964 or put a 3.6 in it.

You don't need to do anything to drive the miles in option 2. You can do that right now w/ the car bone stock.

Can’t argue with driving it. I try to drive my 964 at least once a week, and usually more because I can’t help myself, and it seems to be happier, and leak less, when I do this. I’m averaging 5-6k miles a year, and may actually put more miles on it than my daily. If you took your race car to the PCA DEs at SP, you've probably seen it.
Like tonight for example, I decided to just go get gas, and ended up driving around for an hour. Looked down randomly, and I was dead on 110k miles. Took a picture and then kept going with a smile on my face debating where to take it next. I vote for option 2, stock or not. You bought it as a present it for yourself, so enjoy it. When you’re 80 and looking back, will you be satisfied and have fond memories of it sitting it your garage? Or would all the drives, trips, DEs you did in it be better memories? That’s the way I look at it. I didn’t wait 25 years for it to sit in my garage. I bought mine to make a ton of memories. Now mine is higher mileage, so maybe it’s easier for me. But a friend just bought a 993 with 65k miles and he’s planning to do the same as me. Last edited by Malaz; 04-20-2020 at 06:44 PM.. |

Now in 993 land ...

No offense, but a 70k mile narrow body 993 is far from a collector's item. How much "depreciation" are you worried about and is it worth looking at the car instead of driving it? See, I didn't think so!

Hi
I do believe that its totally OK to enjoy a car as an object and not actually drive it much. As long as you are happy that way who cares? Me personally I cannot wait until my 993 hits 200k in less than 3k time ![]() Berni |

My ‘95 started out as a garage queen with about 30k. Purchased in 2001. Always babied. Then something happened. Only track time now. You only live once. (twice if you’re 007)

Do what makes you feel best. These aren't investments unless they are ultra rare or extremely low mile and original.
I finally caved on my 62k mile 93 964 C2 and am going full out with sunroof delete and full interior change. I don't plan to sell and if i do i will deal with it accordingly. As said how much depreciation will you have and you only live once.

We are doing the full panel replacement. My friend Pino from RSR restoration is doing the work personally. The panel is huge and apparently Porsche has a high demand for these. I was told they have something like 40 in stock.
![]() ![]() I did the Fenn lane panel on my track car and we did weld the entire panel in so there was no chance of cracking. The panel was a nice way to do it but in all honesty the hours involved aren't much different so I prefer to have it done using the factory part on this car.
