Porsche Targa: 96 - 98: General Info Needed
Good friend of mine has got the bug. Was wondering about the targa version. Specific questions include:
1) Rigidity of targa vs. Coupe 2) How hot does it get under the glass, can you feel the sun coming through when driving with top closed? 3) Any issues with the Top, how well does it work

I test drove 97' a year ago at Rocky Mountain Autosport.
I had the car all day in about a 65 degree afternoon. The temp inside the car did not get overly warm. The wind noise when the top was closed...was noisy enough for me to think coupe.... As for rigidity, the targa is a cab with the targa roof.

I have a 96 targa.
I live in NC, it can get hot. With the shade the A/C works fine. But yes, it can get hot without the shade in the direct sun when driving, but at that point i just open it if I'm not using the A/C or close the shade. They are not as rigid as a coupe if you ask me and yes they make some wind noise but it's worth it if you like the open ride. I have a cab too, but I like the targa better because it's less hassle. |

Tam911, thank you for the info. My friend is monitoring the thread so he'll probably have more questions after the weekend.
So, are you happy with the Targa in general. What does the maintenance look like on it? I've got an 82 that I do practically everything on. That all changed with the newer engines. In general, how has the reliability been?

The Targa has been a great car so far. As for reliability I give it a 9 out of 10.
the typical things have needed attention like leaky valve covers the SAI and a loose relay for the fog lights and that's it. Oh, and a rattle in the glove box door. I did all the work myself. Other than those few things the car has been rock solid and dependable. I also have an 88 cab that I do all the work on. If you can work on an 82, you can fix most things on the new air cooled cars. There just more stuff to deal with and it's a little tigher in the engine compartment. we've had the 88 since new,,, two words bullet proof :-)) |

He's monitoring the sight. I'll PM if he's interested. He's early in the process right now. But spring is in bloom in Cleveland and the bug might get stronger. Plus, I'll be out in July and I want to drive it.
