Seeking opinions on a '90 964..

Soliciting opinions, after extensive research on the early 964 issues...

The details;

- 90K miles
- 3rd owner
- Rare Linen color, original paint, great condition
- Minimal front road rash
- Panels straight, gaps good, no flaws except as noted
- New pads/drilled rotors
- Later large rear calipers
- Strut brace
- 4k on BFG KD's
- 17" Turbo twist (I know, not everyones fav)
- New Bilsteins/H&R springs
- Lowered and corner balanced by TRE
- Autothority (?) chip (orig avail)
- R134 upgrade
- Carrera cup muffler (orig avail)
- Cat bypass (cat avail)
- Factory tool kit, jack, inflator, manual
- Recent rblt dizzy (yes it has the vent kit)
- Full leather
- New red top optima
- fogs replaced with ducts
- front splitter
- Bentley, Tech Specs
- Valentine 1
- decent audio
- Test driven by Scott in N LA, says handled and ran "like a dream"

The not so good details;

- docs only for last 3 yrs (10k)
- oil drips, apparently several drops per week, none on the heat exchangers, source unknown, but appears to be case seam.
- very shallow 3" depression above RH rocker (fixable)
- dime sized ding behind LR wheel (kinda fixable)
- barely noticeable 2" scuff on LF fender (not fixable)
- needs new rocker weather stripping
- 2 small areas of leather wear thru surface, at seat control, and driver side door (fixable)
- carpet not that clean
- R side of rear bumper resprayed, tone just slightly off
- large (1/2"?) chip (sort of repaired) on rear bumper
- clutch and DMF unknown
- 3 of 4 wheels have minor curb rash

So far price is $18.4

Let me know what you think.

TRE will be doing the PPI this Friday.

pic's on the way...

Recent history is better than no history.

If it is a complete re-seal, that means the motor comes out and apart. Then you have the WYIT mentality. I think a re-seal alone is about $6k, then if things need replacement/refurbishment you are close to $10K.

Definitely get a PPI. Nothing you describe would be consider out of character for a daily driver.

A respray on the bumpers is common on the 964\993 - the bumper you see is actually a plastic cover and is prone to damage from road debris.

Paintless dent removal guys can do wonders - I've seen them remove softball sized dings.

Get the car detailed - many times they can bring back carpet as well.

The big unknown here is the oil leaks - that there should tell you to buy or not.

Get a PPI to see what that leaks all about. If its not the dreaded cyl leak and its something simple the price sounds okay. Check for the distrib vent kit too. By the way those are boxster wheels not turbo twists. I like that color.

Recently purchased a similar 90 C2. Would highly recommend PPI. I went against my better judgement and didn't have as previous owner had a 90K service done 2 weeks before purchase and trusted. Wish I had a PPI done. Had MobileWorks East come by today to point out somethings that I could have thought of more (nothing really major), but may have been a better informed buyer. Learned my lesson. Good luck.

It is not a deal killer but missing records is an issue: Make sure the mileage is correct! Run a carfax and make sure it supports the mileage. Also, make sure the car is not from a rust belt state. Even a newer, all galvanized car, will show signs of that. I

Sounds like you are all set for the PPI, so you will find out about the source of the oil leak. It generally is not adviseable to have a PPI at the shop that previously serviced the car, but in this case it may be okay, with the shop's reputation. The oil hardly ever comes from the case seam. That's just the lowest point where it usually ends up collecting.

It is a matter of taste, but that color is "rare" for a reason. Really a turn off for me, and I would think for many other buyers as well. If you like it, fine, but "rare" does not make it more desireable in this case and it will likely hurt resale value.

I was underwhelmed by the 5 speed and general power of a 92 C2 that I looked at. It was just barely even with my (hopped up) SC with a lot less throttle response at low speeds. You definitely will want to test drive the car in all road conditions. It had too much of a GT feel to it for me, with the stock suspension etc.

That said, think about what other cars are out there in that price range and do not fall in love with this particular vehicle. If you are set on a 964, drive others as well, so you can compare.

The price is too high. That car is a 15k car here in CA, with the mileage and the issues it has. Have I mentioned the color? I am sure that if you are serious and sit the owner down, you'll get it for 15. Negotiate hard! Be firm on your final offer and walk. Many sellers I have dealt with would call a week later and accept. I take my wife with me when I buy, she is ruthless. I hope I never get divorced, I'll be homeless ...

I hope my input is useful. Good Luck!

Cheers, George

aigel, I agree with your comments 100%. I personally like the color, and expect some leverage on price since it limits market appeal. I agree that stock 964 suspension is too soft, but this car has been upgraded. The oil leak will be the first thing checked, and if it's from the heads, I will walk.
Oh, can I borrow your wife?

Please see this parallel thread for much more feedback...

Al,

Wife is for rent - but only as a negotiator. Seriously, if you do not fall in love with a car, you can set your price and walk away. If you get a call back, then that's great. If not, there are a ton of these cars out here in CA.

I read the other thread. Glad to see that many of my points came up in other's answers as well.

Keep us updated!

Cheers, George

Dual mass flywheel replaced yes/no

Top end ovhl yes/no

Early 964's has problems with the flywheel rubber breaking down.
Engines have history of valve guides wearing out early, mine went at 51k miles.

Both repairs expensive, if not done.

More info here http://www.porsche964.co.uk/

Good luck, Don
