Close to first 993 (and Porsche) purchase
Boy, am i glad that I found this forum. The funny thing is that while I was traveling on business this week, I was changing planes in Atlanta, I got behind a pilot on the escalator and on his roller case of "pilot stuff", there was a pelicanparts.com sticker. Two actually, one old and worn, and the other new. I would never have guessed what it was about without the image of back half of the 911. What a nice surprise this has been.
Anyway - I have decided to take the plunge into a 993 cab. I sold my 00 Saleen Mustang speedster and have found what I think could be a suitable 993. It is silver, with a six speed, black top, black leather interior, white gauges, and turbo twist wheels. It has 35k miles and model year 1996. Definitely planning on getting a strong PPI done, but wonder if there are any not so obvious gotchas that people can relay for this year, model, etc. Thanks in advance for the insight and time in posting your reply. Ron. |

Sounds good! The only downer from a 96 is the fact no one makes a ECU chip for it.
I would make sure the 30k service was done, the top works flawlessly, & that is doesn't leak oil. You may need to do the valve & timing covers since it wasn't driven much. Oh, it might need rear tires, check the insides. |

hey guy interesting saleen to a porsche.
am also considering moving from muscle to classic porsche. in my case 04 terminator cobra, 2.3 whipple blower/60lb. injectors/other stuff, measured on a dyno at 575rwHP with full suspension set up (outruns BMW M's on the hillls). TO A 92 911 America Roadster (250 made), 1 owner 65000 on the clock...raspberry red with matching interior. not sure if this forum has any value or not.....sure not like a mustang forum as I have not had any response to my posting....and see you have not had much either..... |

Welcome. I have a 96 and it's a great car, an upgrade from an '87. I bet the pilot was Rattlsnak, he's based in Atlanta. On the OT forum there's a thread on the flt 447 crash and all our pilots are posting there, might be interesting to see who it was.
The only issue with the 96+ cars is the endemic SAI problem. I presume GA is a smog state, if the SAI passages get clogged the car will throw a code and won't pass smog. Fixes range from moderate (flush) to gastly expensive (top end rebuild). There is a sticky on the top page to read more about this. It's not a 100% problem, and the 70-90% of people that are not having the problem don't post to let us know. But it is a challenge, you'll want to make sure that the drive cycle/readiness codes are set before you take possession of the car to ensure that they were not reset just prior to sale and have the light go on as you drive your first mile.

Now in 993 land ...

With that mileage you should have no mechanical concerns. I would make sure you have good verification of the low mileage and make sure there is no accident history / flood etc. I recommend you only buy from a first or second owner, preferably a local car.
Good Luck, George |

Ron, Make sure all the trouble lights show up when you turn the ignition on. Some people like to hide problems by pulling the lights so they don't show up. Make doubly sure the check engine light functions properly. You also might want to check out Rennlist.com. The 993 forum is very active on that site.
