993 owners, when does your power come on?

I've only driven two 993's.

Mine is an early '95 and my car makes good power in all gears up to 5k and then between 5-7k the power is explosive like the car had a turbo on it...is yours like this?

I drove my friends '96 varioram and it makes good power all the way up to 7k but it doesn't have that 5-7k power surge like I have..

I'd like to add my car is quicker than the '96...

95's non-vram car power (torque is what you are talking about) comes on at 4K rpm.
96+ came in at 3K RPM. You don't feel that hit at 5K rpm because the torque curve is so flat.

Yup, Axl911 nailed it, it's the Varioram, it makes the engine much smoother, but give a huge midrange torque boost. While being faster it doesn't feel it. The 96+ is faster, trust me.

Thanks AXL911...I understand now....kind of like when my 2.7 hits the high RPM range...

Stealth993....forgot to mention the '96 I drove is a C4S....and it's not as quick as my '95...

That should not make a difference, I have a 95 C4 & a 97 C4S, the C4S is much faster, just about every where, the C4 has much better low end in the 2-3000 zone, but after that it looses. The C4 takes less throttle then the C4S, so that can make it feel faster.

In the end, stock vs stock, the Varioram, is always faster, it does have more peak torque & HP.

Basically, yes. That was my impression, having driven both and comparing them to my 3.2L.

The non V-Ram engines will feel like most previous flat sixes. V-Ram flattens out the torque curve; which results in the power delivery feeling more "modern." Six and one, half dozen, etc, etc.

That said, engine condition is just as much of a factor given the age of these cars, in my experience. A properly rebuilt 3.6L will put down noticeably more power than a more tired motor; even if well cared for.
