1991 964 smoking dilema help
ok I took all my plugs out well the top ones, they are realy dry and tan colored no oily residue at all. put them back on the car warmed the car up took only the top plugs out again and performed a compression test. the results were #1@ 190 #2 @ 195 #3 @192 #4@ 195#5 @195#6 @192. when my car gets to normal operating temp it starts to smoke some from the exhaust bluish. I did notice that when I took the tube from the rear mounted fan that goes downwards to somewhere there is smoke coming from there as well. my question is since my car does have some oil leaks and even though I did steam clean it a while back,is it possible or has anybody had oil actually make its way into the heat exchangers and possibly cause this. this car does not not smoke at initial start up. it was parked for 3.5 years at one point of its life. could it be valve stem seals? wouldn't valve stem seals cause initial start oil smoke puffs? give me your experiences on this matter please. what would a valve stem seal cost now a days if this would be the case? thanks in advance for your help guys

Yes, oil can get inside of the heat exchangers and cause smoking in the heating system. The heat exchangers don't seal to the header tubes -there is a gap between each tube and the heat exchangers - so if there is a bad oil leak oil can get into the HE's through those gaps. Blue exhaust smoke is likely from worn valve guides, but I would do a leak down test to check for leaky rings as well. I suppose if only the stem seals were bad but the valve guides and piston rings were okay you might not see any noticeable smoke at start up. Whenever I've thought about just changing valve seals, I've found loose valve guides too. But I'm sure others have different experience with this.

well just started messing with the vacuum hose on the front of my intake manifold, and found out that if I disconnect one of them my smoking terminates. the minute I plug it back up it smokes again? this hose goes under my intake ctr section plenium and into a metal reservoir which I am trying to identify. if anybody knows that part's function please advise. I just drove the car and it shifts no problems and my brakes work fine so...?

Show us a picture of the hose you're talking about.

Steam cleaning will wash oil/dirt down on to the exhaust and heater boxes.

Start with the simple things first. Is it possible the engine is over filled with oil. Let it really warm up and if at all possible take it for a 20 minute drive. Then park it on level ground and pull the dip stick. Also check the oil indicator needle on the dash. If that checks out....you say the car sat for 3 years not great for any seals as they have a tendency to schrink and leak. Check the valve cover seals and steering pump seals. They will leak down to the heat exchangers and cause the exhaust to smoke on the outside of them.
Its very possible you need new guides if the car still has bluish smoke out the tail pipe. Hope this helps, Dan PS never a good idea to steam clean a engine |
