1996 993 Trans question

I'm trying to help a friend who is looking at a low mileage 1996 993. During the test drive, he said he would describe the shifting as "notchy", like it might be the beginning of synchro issues. Is this a normal thing in car of that year/model, or something to be concerned about?

Shouldn't be "notchy" but that might indicate poor clutch action-may just need
a fluid flush.

I have had 2 993's with 90,000 on each. Both had a slight problem catch from 1st to 2nd until they were to pertains temp.
Oil change helped.

If you want "notchy", try a pre G50 model...LOL! I have driven probably six 993s over the years and although it (the G50) is a simpler driving experience vs the 915 that preceeded it, I don't find it in any way as modern feeling as the 996 tranny. If your friend is thinking that a 993 tranny is supposed to feel like that of an Accord, I'm afraid he will be disappointed. I also would agree that shifting action becomes smoother after 15-20 minutes of running. I never "rush" my Porsche tranny's....especially when cold. Cheers

This depends on where he is coming from. This is a well shifting transmission, the best, in the classic air cooled Porsche world, but it doesn't compare to a 2015 era vehicle. The best way to get to the bottom of this would be to bring the car to a mechanic for inpsection that is specialized in these cars.

Transmission work on a 993 is VERY pricey, so the PPI money will be well spent. I had my transmission rebuilt, and while I hopped it up with steel synchros, shift forks and LSD, it cost more than my whole 911 SC when I was done!

The right gear oil (Mobil Delvac), fresh motor and trans mounts, and new nylon shift cup, may very well make all the difference; but as others have stated, things do smooth out after 15-20 mins.

I have been told the synchros in '95 and '96 model year 993's had a tendency to be a bit weaker
between 1st and 2nd gear and was improved or strengthened in following years..
That said if buyer is expecting Honda accord or even BMW level smoothness he's got another thing
coming .
Yes it relaxes with gaining temp but is still a very involving shift linkage...Bert

I have a 95 and it had a notchy 3rd gear even after a new slave cylinder and bleed. Fellow pelican advised to bleed clutch again with a bit more pressure with rear elevated more ( cars rear. Not mine ) and start shifting at 42rpm's. Been shifting much better since advice taken
