transmission whine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anyone expereinced a pretty significant transmission noise from there 996. When I drive my car 50 mph + I hear a transmission whine while I am on the gas. Lifting off the gas the sound goes right away and re-applying throttle it comes right back and it is always present above 50mph.

Anypone experience this and possible have a solution to reduce or diagnose a bigger problem?

thank you

No, changing to Swepco will do nothing.

I reiterate, stop driving your car and get it to a professional ASAP!!!

Little update, I finally got the car into my mechanic (a dedicated P-car guy) and he is not convinced that it is the pinion bearing. He did notice that the rear tires were 2 sizes too big Ugly situation, they were on the car when I bought it from the dealer and he stated that that may have caused some tranny damage.

We are swapping out the tires and I am keeping my fingers crossed that maybe that is all that was needed?

thanks for the submissions

The tire size would only hurt the trans if the RR and LR tires were different sizes. Best way to tell a bad bearing is to take out the drain plug stick your finger in there toward the rear of the car and if you get a bunch (alot) of metal goo from the magnet, there's likely a bad bearing in the trans.

You are describing the exact same symptoms that my '99 exhibited. I had the pinion bearings replaced in the gearbox, and all is good. The only noise I hear now is the wonderful PSE.

If his car is a C4, which his signature indicates, it will if the diameter is different from the front. OP should mount proper size tires & check the magnet & replace the diff fluid with new Porsche oil.
