Creating a 944 Spec Racer
Hey guys -
First attempt here to get a car set up specifically for auto-x, DE's, and eventually 944 Spec racing. First, a little background. Bought this '84 944 with a fellow pelican (tdw28210) when we decided to get into de/racing. We both have 911's, mine a '84 targa and tdw's '85 m491 targa, but didn't want to dedicate them to the track. This little 944 was found locally and it was a steal. Exactly what you need for this type of project... strong motor, decent body, and crappy interior. ![]() Once we got it to the shop, the teardown of the interior began. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() From here, it will be to finish stripping out the interior, wire brush to get the gunk off, and start with plans for roll cage and seats. I'll update when progress is made, and twd28210 i'm sure will do the same. We're both newbies at this game, so please, keep the pointers coming.

Keep up the good work. Some of the best advice i got when I started to slide down your slippery slope in my 911 was to carefully review and understand the rules that you ultimately want to run under (Spec 944 in your case) and only make modifications as you go that move you toward compliance with those rules. What you don't want to do is spend a lot of time or money on something that you later have to re-do to comply with the rules that you will ultimately be running under.

Got the 944 Spec rules printed off. Want to do this one time only...hah. I think the tentative plan is to upgrade entire braking system, freshen up suspension, and get the cage, seats, and wheel in the car. Get a feel for the car doing the DE's and AutoX this year, make changes as we learn to drive this car to its limits. Anyone have thoughts on the OMP TRS seats? Entry level, I know, but for now this will be a budgeted build. I like the fact they are FIA homologated.

You have to sit in all the seats if you can. A local shop has Recaro, OMP, Racetech and maybe more. The OMP ARS was my favorite seat. If the TRS is the same style seat just made with different materials I would get one. I'm trying to fugure out a way to sell my Recaro's and get a ARS driver seat and a TRS passager.. I just loved the seat.. but having said that you butt may be different than mine so you may hate em..

Good find and glad you ripped that interior out before giving it the "black light" test. Love the idea and am a fan of the project. Hope to get some time soon to drop by and do some wrenching with ya.

When you put it on the track respect your number two rod bearing....
at a minimum I would replace rod bearings before hitting the track along with adding oil pan baffle and the pump pickup surround and an external oil cooler. Good luck.......... |

Welcome!
Head on over to www.944spec.org - there are lots of great build threads, which can give you ideas and inspiration, and save some headaches for you as well. There's an active, and rapidly growing contingent of 944 members in NASA's SE region - you're arriving to the party just in time!
