Do I wave at Cayannes?

I'm w/Brian, "waving is not my game"...so I'm doing a LOT of states, and a lot of off-interstate driving, guess what happens..I catch eyeball view a young VW driver that is doing an obvious restoration/big repair on a real VW..and he gives me a big wave..things were finished real quick..start thinking/nothing better to do, and I figure out that real VWs/911 are family, WTF..I'm looking for other real VW bugs now..and it's obvious that a left lane rolling 911 is going out of it's way/big time because I have to slow down and cross into the center lane, to give a THUMBS-UP to a right lane speed limit air cooled VW bug..and it was worth it because I always caught a BIG smile..the wave became a secondary/ insignifcant response..and on a BigBig Ride strange things happen so be careful when you do yours...................Ron

Would I wave or flash my lights at a Porsche Tractor? Sure! But I try to avoid getting too enthusiastic in a dereasing radius turn that might put me in the field where its plowing!

I always nod and smile or wave at other Porsches. Often they don't react (especially 924 drivers).

Would I nod/wave at a Cayenne? Not unless he/she waves at me first.

On a side note: Don't you think the Touareg is nicer to look at? It's like the Cayenne is one big air intake. Oh and the Volvo XC90 is actually pretty nice. Except when viewed directly from the front.

I am gonna wave at every Porsche every time I see one. I live in Northern IN so my Cayanne waving will be limited to two or three waves a year. Heck I accidently wave at more people than that. Besides alot of Porsche drivers don't quite know what the heck I am drivin' anyway.

What are the chances Cayenne pushers/owners/leasees
have a smaller 'brother' in the other side of the garage @home?
Maybe most of the Cayennes liked their sports versions so they
stayed with the brand when they needed "soccer mom" wheels.

It is a Porsche. I acknowledge all Porsches until an individual proves that he or she is not deserving. I try to stay away from generalizations. Will probably be an interesting group. Track and maintenance may not be high on their agenda but there may be other common interests. I'm withholding all judgements on the Cayenne and the owners since I have nothing to really base a judgement on.

Just my .02 marks, uh euros.

Perhaps it is a Porsche.... but then the Porsche that I grew up loving is perhaps dead.

The company that threw caution to the wind and went racing with the 917. The company that dominated the world with the 956 and 962. The company that won Paris-Dakar with a REAL sportscar. The company that truely understood that racing improves the breed and PROVES that you build the best cars on the planet.

This company is apparently dead. Now instead of racing, they build SUV's to milk $$$ from rich soccer moms. The majority of Porsche customers today dont know what LeMans is. They simply want a badge that is considered more hip than BMW.

I will have a hard time waving at the pepper box because I will be feeling sick and mourning with grief every time I see one.

Thank goodness I am also a Ferrari fan and drive a 308GTB. Ferrari is now the only real sportscar company left.

Interesting.

Chevrolet builds the Corvette. If I were a Corvette owner, I do not think Iwould be waving at every Chevrolet pickup on the road. I think the problem is not so much the fact that Porsche is building a SUV as it is that they (Porsche) choose to put a Porsche crest on it, a crest that has a long history of road and racing cars. If it had come out with its own crest (ala Lexus or Acura, which separate tem from their lower priced and less sophisticated stable mates, peraps the furor would not be as polar as it is.

Just my opinion. BTW. I will not be waving at any Cayennes, simply because I am quite certain most (not all, don't get upset if you are buying one and already have a "real" Porsche) wouldn't know why I was waving in the first place.

Something to think about: Porsche is making a big financial bet on this vehicle. Porsche has no secured debt (tradable bank loans or bonds) - only equity which is still majority family owned. This means that it is using all of its own capital to finance this new model. If this model fails miserably, the company will likely be forced to write down large capital expenses. This means that our little independent company may be forced to tap capital markets further and take it one step closer to being swallowed up into just another corporation instead of the fiercely independent, anti establishment company we know and love.

Don't really know why an SUV needs to go 160mph, but would happily do an even trade for my 914 to find out... I'll wave at the new jersey and connecticut soccer moms, maybe my wife will finally be interested in my car fetish?

It's already a success. Autoweek says the wait list is 2 years. According to our host, they only need to sell 25,000 to break even on the investment (remember VW paid at least half of the development costs). With 25,000/year production capacity at the new plant, 2 years of orders means they've already sold 50,000.

That's only 4,000 units less than their entire 2001 production (986 and 996 together).

all it takes is about 15 mintues of skimming the 911 board to figure out why they woudn't want to wave back. they probably think you've got strings leading from your nose to your fingers and you're trying to put your nose higher in the air using this method . i had some friends from the Netherlands (none are Porsche owners, all are car enthusiasts) tell me what europeans think of older 911 owners in general and i'd rather not post the comments here

honestly though. i've talked with Porsche owners from around the country and i've noticed that inareas where people don't wave to each other in general... Porsche owners don't wave to each other much. i've also talked to car owners from around the world and wherever you have an area in which people are generally friendly; people will wave to each other regardless of the marque of the car. i used to have VW Scirocco owners waving to me when i had the Scirocco 16V. same deal some times with our Geo Tracker 4x4. but if we go to another, unfriendlier part of the country, then nobody waves to anybody there.

it's regional.

sure i'll wave to Cayenne drivers. i'm a realist that acknowledges that they're doing more to support and affect the future of Porsche with their $60,000+ purchase than I have in my entire life.

Usually I can tell immediately whether the Porsche driver in the other car will wave back, whether the car is another 944 or a new 996 or Boxster...

... first of all, they look like they're actually DRIVING the car instead of just wanting to BE SEEN in it. Porsche enthusiasts (or any car enthusiasts, for that matter), as opposed to Porsche snobs, have a certain LOOK about them. I can't really explain it, but some of you must know what I'm talking about... like my uncle... he is a 60-something car enthusiast and the first thing I would be able to tell about him was that he was a car nut, even if I didn't know anything about him. I don't know how else to explain it, I just know, and I've never been wrong...
