Targas vs coupes imported

I'm looking at getting another 911 78-89 and notice there have to be 10 targas for every coupe I see. I'm looking for a coupe. Does anyone have data on how many of each were imported during those years or in general.

That's because people are always trying to get rid of those rattle trap flexi flyers with the perma-soggy interior option!

There were more coupes produced than Targas

Ignoring the special models, according to the Red book I have

US coupes

78-2436
79-2013
80-info not provided (4272 total cars)
81-1573
82-2457
83-2599
84-2282
85-1959
86-2619
87-2916
88-2916
89-1156

Total (except 1980)= 24,926

US Targa

78-2579
79-1965
80-info not given (4272 total cars)
81-1407
82-2426
83-1430
84-2260
85-1942
86-1976
87-2232
88-2232
89-860

Total (except 1980)= 21,309

There could be errors in the data ( I find it strange that the same number of cars is listed for 1987 and 1988 for both coupes and Targas) but that is the info I have.

Have you considered buying a nice late model targa. You could save 5-7k over a coupe. 1988 does not have leaks or twisting. I owned 2 coupes and have been happiest with the targa.

Are you looking for a particular coupe from 78-89 (that's a broad range)? Approximate budget? Color, specs. Maybe someone can lead you to a car on PP...

Although there were more Coupes built, Coupes are much more desirable which is why you don't see as many of them for sale. Personally I don't care for the way the targa bar breaks up the smooth lines of the coupe, but I could see how the open air would be pretty cool too from a driving standpoint.

i owned many Targa's, and yes a coupe is much nicer not only the looks.
Special the noise, leaking, storing/folding the top get's on your nerves in the end. Buy a nice cabrio if you like open motoring or do if you can buy both a coupe and a cabrio special 1987 with original non automatic/manual top if you can find one.

Coupes definitely look better! However I would not overlook a very nice targa over an average condition coupe.

I can’t speak for the earlier model Targa’s but I find the 964 Targa to be perfectly acceptable for long road trips with the top on or off. Once the top was rebuilt the wind noise went away and I have no problem folding the top and stuffing it in the frunk. The chassis is tight, rattle free and I didn’t note any flex when hammering through the snake on Mullholland, Route 33 in Ojai or any of my runs to Palomar. The weight difference is also minimal, about 50 lbs more for the Targa from what I have observed from corner balance numbers. I just finished a 1100 mile drive in my Targa and never once did I wish I had a coupe.

Find a good example and you’ll love the coupe/convertible experience. Coupes are more sought after because they are preferred for track/AX use and yes some prefer the original lines of the coupe but that’s a matter of taste.
