912/6 on BAT and Irrational Exuberance

Auction ended yesterday with a super aggressive $21K bid.

Being somewhat local, I wanted to see for myself, so inspected the car 3+ days before auction end.

What a horror show.

Tried to warn the BAT folks, but had a few people who hadn't seen the car suggest they knew better...

You can only do so much on BAT, and I couldn't post my photos of the underside of the car, though I did add up the $1K+ in sheet metal it needed... And sometimes if I try to point out 'iffy' details on cars up for auction, it just pisses everyone off.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1969-porsche-912-25/

Here are a couple shots of the $21K 912 with bitsa 911 engine with serial number partially ground off.

What would you have bid?

I was prepared to bid, but just short of $11K, and bidding raced past that pretty dramatically.

The engine (which is frozen) would have parted out for maybe $14-1600, and the car needed a complete re-wiring job. And who knows what else...

That was blatant fraud in that sell, you tried to warn people.

Clever suspension pan replacement! Just kick out as much of the flaky, rusted old one as you can, and plop the new one in it's place!
Shudder to think what's under that paint..

I expect there is an 'out.' considering the seller stated the 'floorboards have been replaced.' And I don't think applying fiberglass patches really validates that claim.

But really, it's not as if the seller had ever said the engine turns over or that it had ever run in the chassis, or that the chassis was professionally repaired...

Honestly its terrible and the car needs a nut and bolt resto. That said for someone capable, with a garage its got some upside as a buy in the mid teens. 15K would have been very fair but i think the seller knew his audience, and BAT responded as it inevitably does.

I didn't even post the pictures of the a-pillars which have a tapering gap on the left and an even more tapered gap on the right -- essentially zero clearance between the a-pillar and op of the vent window area. So, bent chassis. Add Celette time to the welding bill...

Normally, I charge for inspections, but I wanted to throw up a red flag on this one as a freebie.

Man, that repair is hilarious! I wonder if the new section is even welded in, or if they simply bonded it to the old with some adhesive, and maybe a few pop rivets!

BaT has made me question a lot about this classic car market. I don't understand why GTVs are $55,000 cars now. I don't understand how G-Bodies that aren't sub 20,000 mile cars are reaching into the 70s. I don't get how people are spending $20,000+ on a myriad of old trucks that were built in massive numbers and from eras where emissions equipment choked out all performance.

I guess a lot of people have a lot of cash sitting around and think these vehicles are all more scarce than they are.

In my opinion the "peanut gallery" is the best part and advantage of BAT. To ignore your input renders that advantage useless. Good looking out. Too bad they were blinded by excitement

The peanut gallery is interesting. I was on BaT a year ago commenting on all the Ferraris that had conversions (TRs, BBis, 308/328s, Mondials, 360s and 550s, etc), some that were done by some of the shops I worked for and I believe it added more money to the auction. I had first-hand knowledge of many cars, some that were actually done when I was there. Guys wanted to argue with me on this.

I also added, what I thought at the time, educated and no-nonsense comments about particular 911s and several 944s/951s - cars that I have owned and have been around all my life since I could drive. They did not like the real comments I put in, and some were flagged as being not constructive when they were the truth.

BaT doesn't like truth. The peanut gallery, overall, doesn't speak the truth. It's like the Wikipedia of classic car guides regurgitated by armchair people. I have seen some really good comments - as yes, there are several people who really know their stuff. But these are way, way out numbered by wannabes and clowns who don't know because they really - don't know.
