So you blah blah blahed the car a few posts earlier, and then all of a sudden it’s a unicorn to you. Sounds a bit bi-polar. There is nothing at all about that car that would put it in unicorn status to any serious collector.

There are tons of 930s with less miles on them. I’d have to add at least a couple of them together in my collection to get even close to that mileage, and that would be on rarer cars as well.

A true unicorn is rare regardless of its mileage, that one’s a stock 930 in a very common color with 33k miles on the clock.

Not a unicorn.

Why does it matter if there are 1 or 1000 for sale? Supply has no effect on demand right?

Not a unicorn.

You clearly did not understand my point.

Everyone was blah blahing about the pros and cons of the car (ugly wheels, etc)
"33k miles" was the sledgehammer to render all that blabbing a giant giant moot point.
Everyone knows that mileage is a massive factor in price. Period.
Might not make sense, and you may think it's stupid, but that's the reality.

So, say whatever you want about the car ("blah blah")
33k miles makes it a $98k car, just as the market proved.
The 2nd highest bidder was at $96k
33k miles is a unicorn, and the strong bidding reflected it.

If 33k miles is "unicorn" then what would this one be labeled?

sugarwood, you are probably the only person that would consider an otherwise stock 930 with no really special or unique distinguishing characteristics to it a unicorn, and it’s simply because it has 33k miles on the clock - strange. Just because the buyer paid 98k doesn’t somehow qualify the car as a unicorn, that just determined its selling price on that specific day, that is it.

If this car were listed for sale and in the ad it stated that it’s a unicorn, that would be absolutely hilarious, I’d actually think it was a joke. As anyone who knows what a unicorn really is in terms of the collector car world knows this 930 doesn’t deserve that kind of status. The guys buying and collecting rare (unicorn) Porsche’s know full well what a unicorn is, and this doesn’t even come close to qualifying.

Sh|t, this would be a driver 930 if it were in my collection. And I’m not alone, I’m sure many collections would be the same. Unicorn, as the term applies to collector cars, is intended to be used for much rarer cars than this one. If you choose to stretch the meaning of it, then that’s you and you alone.

I am not addressing the condition of the car, only the unicorn mileage.
In Sugarwood's book, anything driven only 1000 miles a year is a unicorn.
If the car was a burnt out carcass, it would still be a mileage unicorn.

However, this raises an interesting discussion.
What is unicorn mileage?

My friend recently purchased a 15 year old BMW with only 60k miles.
It is very rare to find that model of BMW with such low miles.
He was been repeatedly calling it a unicorn.

YMMV. :D:D:D

By this logic most Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s, McLaren’s, etc are all unicorns.

Miles are so low because the previous owner couldn’t figure out how to get jumper cables on it. So it just sat and he drove his Ferrari.

JMS935 12-31-2018 06:22 PM

A true unicorn is something so rare that it makes you gasp and say holy sh|t when you see it on the road, just like how you’d react if you actually saw a unicorn in the forest - hence the saying...I just saw a unicorn. Meaning it’s the car that detemines its unicorn status, not the car’s mileage. Having ultra low mileage only adds to it. An otherwise common car with very low miles can also be considered a unicorn by some I suppose, but definitely not a 33k mile 30 year old car that was produced in the several thousands.

As far as I’m concerned, the odometer read out alone doesn’t determine a car’s unicorn status, it can and does add to its allure, but a true unicorn doesn’t lose its uniqueness just from driving it a lot. Meaning...a really rare car is a really rare car whether it’s driven 20k miles a year as a daily driver, or parked in a museum its entire life. If it’s a 1 of 3, then it’s a 1 of 3 whatever the hell the odometer says. You shouldn’t have to get a guy to pull over to check his odometer first before determining if it’s a unicorn or not, that’s not really how it works.

Would you consider a Yugo with 0 miles a unicorn?

Here is a Supra-corn

No, but I saw one parked on the street the other day, then it drove away under its own power. That amazed me.

I wanted to buy Sugarwood’s book but they don’t have it on Amazon.

specialtyoneinc 01-01-2019 12:17 PM

Can we all agree that this is a Unicorn?

Another 930 on BAT Thoughts....?

Interesting 79 930 currently on BaT..

Highly original 79 california 930 barring wood kit..

FIRE DAMAGE..

Located in canada..

Seller is stating that damage was very minimal as check for $3000 was all that was issued for damage.

I’m guessing a 40% reduction in value..

BaT bidders are skittish of any kind of negative carfax.. So probably next to no bidders.

Might be a very very good buy.
