Looks like you are on the right track with preparing the car. One thing, don’t do any underside painting or touch ups. Let the next owner do that. The BaT crowd will accuse you of covering up rust or repairs if they see new paint. The value in your car is its originality.

How many original paint longhoods with no rust remaining now? My guess is 5% or less.

Great article of the sills & 'B' post area- what a nightmare on that white car.

I'll take some pics tomorrow of my kidney bowls on both sides.
The door can't be opened the way the car is positioned tonight.

Appreciate yours & Matt's advice on not painting the bottom.
Thanks!

Ha, I guess I’m the only one who would take sepia over red...

Beautiful ‘73, I hope it goes to a good home.

The browns have their fans I’ve got a friend who has owned a 73.5 just like this one, and then back to back 75 Carreras in chocolate. And he has always easily found buyers.

The fans of brown Porsches are a small minority. Yes, red is much more popular and more loved. Don’t worry red, silver, white, black, grey and really bright 70s color Porsche fans, most people like your car’s color way better than brown ones.

But if you think a brown 911 is cool, like me, you really like them. The future buyer of this car will hopefully really want it...and not just settle for it.

Worked 8 hours polishing, buffing out, waxing, buffing out, - using Griot's Garage products & a Porter-Cable random orbital machine.
The chemicals they sell are good on a cars finish.
It looks better than before; the Fast Correcting Cream does the work of the old 1-2-3-4 step polishes.
It removed a gray surface film I hadn't noticed.
The car gleams now.

About Sepia:
Ferry Porsche was an outdoorsman & an avid hunter- he enjoyed walking the hills in nature. Brown is an earthy color that is found in nature- its earth, soil, leaves.

It better suits a mature person who is perhaps conservative- not needing, nor wanting, to be noticed.
Just someone wanting to drive a fine automobile & appreciate it for its excellence.

My 911 has always attracted people to comment- at gas stations, coffee stops, wherever it was parked, even along highways with other drivers getting an eyeful, too close-up for my comfort.

Nobody has ever said that they don't like the color.
They just loved the car & wanted to tell me that.

thamlin000, thanks for the education about the 'kidney bowl'.

This car has healthy kidney bowl area (both sides the same), thank goodness.

The gapping opening to run these hoses is pure stupidity.
Who did that?
Must be the A/C installer.

It is just inviting all kinds of corrosive matter to enter that orifice and create havoc with the rockers/sills/ kidney bowl.

I consider brown on a 911 to be a flash color, due to it's oddity and the fact that when people see it they are either going to say gross, or boss (aka - it attracts a lot of attention, either negative or positive). Regardless, if someone around here (DFW area of TexASS) doesn't want to get noticed, then they cannot drive a vintage 911 - there are almost none to be seen, so they stand out biggly, no matter the color. I live in a busy, urban/suburban area and drive my Turbo to work about 75% of the time, and in the past two years, I've only seen one other vintage 911 on the road, and that was just once.

I happen to like brown, and think the OP's car is a really neat find for whoever ends up buying it. When I was at the farmer's market this morning I spotted a brown SC on the far side and went over to talk to the owner. I get the same thrill that I always had at seeing a 911, and that's even after owning mine for five years. The woman driving it had put 260k miles on it and had bought it new. I high-fived her twice! She said she bought it to drive, and she followed through. Rawknee is right that no matter what the color, a 911 gets attention because it's rare and stands out so much.

Was polishing & waxing in, under & around the engine lid (hood?).

The strut that holds up the bonnet is well over 30 years old,

and- amazingly- still holds up the cover. This is happiness.

That engine bay needs to be detailed!

I had a 73E same color I bought back in 2000 while home for the 20 year H.S. reunion. I never thought about the color for or against. I was just happy to buy a 911 for 1300 dollars out of a newspaper ad in So. Lake Tahoe. Trailered it home and worked on it while my parents were on a trip to Canada. I had the whole place to myself as I used to come home twice a year for about 2 months at a time.
There is not one car I can compare with that I felt so ripped off in my whole life. If you want to hear the story, and it is a mouthful, then you’ll have to read on.

It came with sport seats which were shabby, and it was a targa. The whole engine bay was caked full of pine needles with no engine hood. My OC CA college friend ripped me off on the seats saying he’d give me his ripped 73S seats in exchange with some JC Whitney covers he’d spend 200 dollars on and to boot. I ignorantly then said done! Over a month later and with 2 cans of WD40 filled up the cylinders and finally it started. It blew a couple of quarts of oil onto the ol’ man’s garage door but I got it running and driving.
I gave it to my younger brother for free hoping to turn him into a 911 man. Two years later he gave it back to me. He didn’t have the money to put into it and wanted straight out of it. It didn’t help that my brother in law David kept joking that Brian drove down the road with the car leaning to the right due to his obese (now ex-wife) Misty on the other side. It never ran quite right anyway since it probably needed the MFI pump done, something I didn’t know then.

I tried to trade it for some work to be done in the home town on two other cars I had there, a 70T and a 70S to a mechanic from out of town (CA) someone who had moved there but good mechanic. I was always out of town generally so I trusted him to do the job, and made the mistake of giving him the title for the above car. No work ever got done on my other two cars.
In 2003 or so I brought back a 73RS #101 from Japan and took it to a Porsche show in Ventura. At the time I saw some **** box cars back in the back of the lot with for sale signs. The above car in brown sepia had a big 1500.00 on the windscreen. I went and looked it over noticing that the engine and tranny were removed. I chatted the guy, got his card and then said this is my f-cking car!! The guy you bought it from is going to get sued and most likely you will be involved. He was shuddering in his boots. I had taken 2 rolls of film with my girlfriend’s camera which she later threw away when she knew what my intention was. Those were the only pictures I ever took of that car. I never followed up on it. The dude still lives in my hometown and works at Jiffy lube or the equivalent. The RS which is why we were there that day. That’s one car I never made money on for various reasons the brown 73E. Let’s just say I learned from it. Your car is pretty clean looking and I think as a result the color is meaningless! That means it's neither here nor there, just vintage and clean which includes the color that will tell the story.

Removed the airbox cover and used a damp cotton towel to wipe down the hoses, wires, distributor cap, various gizmos, sheet metal, body structure, belt, fan shroud & blades.

Anybody could do this to their 911 engine, it is rewarding.
Looks a lot better.

Took about 2 hours, with many rinses, and a whole lot of dirt coming off.
Next time will wear nitrile gloves 'cause my hands were as black as the engine bay was.

I see a well-loved car, with indications of good maintenance--the spark plug wires are an excellent aftermarket choice, and it's had modern A/C lines run (the originals were those red hoses that leaked like crazy). Might be worth it to have the A/C system checked out--they never worked great (the original York compressor is long-since obsolete), but it's a definite plus for a buyer if it's running.

Good luck with the sale--I sold my 73.5 a couple years ago to a neighbor, and it still stings when I see him driving it. They are a lot of fun!

have you fallen for the car again to the point you just might have to keep it? that'd be a great end to this story.

It also has an after-maket, or custom, aluminum air-box with integrated back-fire valve - looks nice, and is undoubtedly way better than the plastic thing that Porsche used.

Period updates rarely devalue these cars unless they are preservation class material. That’s really no different than time certs or Carrera tensioners on a car like this.
