Looking for Honest feedback

Hey, new member here looking to purchase my first 911. I’ve been lurking here for years as I save up money for my dream Porsche. I came across this car, https://rennlist.com/forums/market/1233059 .
It’s a Canadian vehicle and being from vancouver it makes it slightly easier to purchase than importing a car from the States during these times.

Wonder what everyone’s opinion is and possible value as it sits, from what is shown in the pictures. I haven’t reached out to the seller but the add makes it seem like he could be flexible with the price.

Right off the bat it would need metal work, so who knows how many thousands of dollars to make that right. Forward dated rear bumper/deck lid, front bumper would need to be changed. Looks like the entire suspension, brakes would have to be refreshed, motor who knows. It’s definitely a project.

Please share your wisdom with me, love to hear everyone’s feed back.

Martin

I would not take on that project if it were a $20k list. Those floors are bad... really, really bad. But that's me.
You can find better cars for less than what it will take to fix this one.

If you are doing the work yourself and don't count your labor you will be money ahead. Pending it's a matching numbers car which is currently unknown.
But to do the floors and paint how quickly will this car get done? What year will you be able to actually enjoy the car? 2021, 2022,... 2030?

If you are going to pay a shop; keep looking.

$20,000 is more tempting than $35,000 but it is a big project.

It depends where you want to go with it..... back to original could cost you $100,000 in #2 condition...... a sorted and roadworthy #3..... my instinct is to budget $25,000ish with rust repair and panel painting ($unknown), bumpers ($2k) and deck lid change ($500), minor mechanical, brakes etc ($unknown) and an inexpensive interior ($3,000). The car will still have the wrong bright work and be bright yellow.....

I would pass and wait for a better car such as an SC for your first......

That is a big money restoration, and even if you just do the floors properly you're likely looking at the front pan and other areas too. You can do way better, just be patient. There's a silver 72 (I believe) targa for sale in Vancouver, that might be worth a look. Otherwise just leave your name with shops like Turn 3 and see if they can connect you with a seller.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Sounds like this is a bigger project than what I can take on myself. I don’t have any metal work/paint skills so I would need a shop to do all that work. I’ll keep looking around and being patient.

Yeah I’ll keep looking thank you. I’ve been eye balling that 72 for a while now it looks really nice. I don’t have my heart set on a longhood but it is set on a coupe.

Great idea to reach out to Turn 3 I’ll have to do that in the near future. The market in Canada is always so dead with over priced beat down cars.

Good idea. That's how I found my 89 911 coupe. Local shop, car had been sold at mcl sort of dug that. Good luck!

Never ever buy a dude's unfinished project, or worse, recently acquired aborted project.
There is a reason he is punting to a sucker.

Some people are just done with it and will unload a decent project - if that's what you want to deal with - for a lot less than the initial ask.

I agree..... I bought a project w/rebuilt motor and transmission.... all I had to do was body repair and reassemble.... nonetheless it wasn't inexpensive.

If I was looking for one I’d start with a g50 in the 40k range. A driver with few issues. I’d shop indies looking for customer cars that might be for sale. I think the biggest plus for not getting a project is that you can use it right away.

Currency has moved in your favor a little. Mightn’t be a bad time to reach across the border and snaffle up a US car. If your inclination was long-hood, maybe a mid-year g-body is a good spot to look. Narrow hips and lower weight are a nice bridge bw the old and new and a hot 2.8 or 3.2SS would be an exciting prospect.

Calling mechanics is a good shout but I’d have thought they may not give you much time of day if there’s no prior relationship. Don’t call on a Monday or a Friday afternoon. If you tire of that, there are a couple of folks on here that sniff out and inspect cars for a fee. They may have a lead on a couple.

Good luck with the search!

This is exactly what I’m after, a hot 2.8 or 3.2SS is the dream.

I don’t think I have enough saved currently to get one, only have 60K loonies. So with the exchange and Canadian taxes plus, shipping the car up here, I can only afford a car in the low 40k USD.

I’m thinking my best bet is to continue to save for 6 months and then ill be much closer and have more options available to me to find the right car.

That’s unless I hit it out of the park on the GME stock and bankrupt a hedge fund

I think you should be able to find a car up here for $60,000 in decent shape, no? I guess the only later Carrera around is the red one on Vancouver CL but he's asking decent money for that '84. What he's asking could get my attention for my '89 haha...if I see anything around I will let you know.

Cars should start popping up around Vancouver and Victoria soon.

BTW this just appeared in PP classifieds today and it looks really nice, at a great price: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/1084585-1987-porsche-911-carrera.html

I bet it is sold already but if it is not, this could be an awesome car.
