Value original engine or modify
I have a fairly low mileage 76 911s with original engine that runs well just drips a decent amount of oil. I will be pulling the engine for reseal at some point but also have a 2.7 twin spark engine that was built for another car I sold. My question is would the modified engine swap help or hurt the future value of the car as long as I held onto the original engine. Five years ago I wouldn’t have put much thought into it as it is just a 76 but now I’m starting to second guess altering anything from stock.

Two engines? Yes, that would add value.
The 76 is such a screwed up engine situation to start with that if you were to build an RS spec or even RSR spec engine, on your numbers matching case, it would most definitely add value. A buyer for that car starts the inspection by seeing it the 5 blade fan is gone, are the heat exchangers backdated to get rid of the sh.., and does it have a fender mounted cooler. All but a 100% preservation class example should have been gone through by now. The buyer for a 76 wants to see the factory screw ups fixed. Fix it so much that it’s now 73RS spec? That’s a home run.

Absolutely swap it. Hang onto the original engine and store it for posterity and then revisit the question in the future. Sum of the parts may end up greater than the whole. Would be more of a debate if it was the original engine that was being modified. I think you’re in an enviable position.

Adds value. Is the twin plug engine CIS? I'm guessing not.. if not there will be some minor modifications depending on what fuel system it has. The only risk of originality is if you send it somewhere and they do some butchery on the conversion thats hard to undo. May not hurt value but certainly originality. Wether carb or MFI there really isn't too much to worry about. The twin plug would certainly be mo fun !

Thank you for your responses. The current original engine has had all the smog stuff deleted, pop off valve, turbo valve covers and typical 2.7 upgrades.
The twin spark I have is set up for carbs so I would need to do some fuel stuff along with ignition of course. I guess as long as I buy additional parts that need to be modified opposed to modifying original items like the engine fuse panel, I can always go back. I tried to sell the twin spark engine with zero luck and with the rising prices of 911’s and even 914’s I don’t see another one in my near future to put this engine in. I am leaning more to just enjoy it in my current car. Thanks |

You’ve made the right call there I think. If you build a nice 2.7 with carbs or efi, it should be salable when done with it
