Trade-in an SC ?

Anyone recently trade an SC at a Porsche dealer?

I’ve had the SC 15 years now —-15 years ago today actually—. I love it. But, I’m over it. I don’t drive it anymore.

I’m not ready just yet to let it go but in a year or two I think I will be

What I want is a new Cayman 718 S

Looking at BAT, I figure my SC is a $45k to $55K car

Just lookin at what’s for sale on Pelican, I’m stunned at what people are asking for, even for a roller

Problem for me is, I do not want to deal with selling the car. I won’t deal with BAT or eBay. Not even sure I have patience to put it up here

I was thinking, Porsche dealers must know what these cars are going for and maybe I could get a good price in a trade when I’m ready

I’m willing to leave money on the table considering I only paid $12k for the car and in order to avoid the selling process

Anyone do this or attempt to trade in their SC to a Porsche dealer? My guess is that they don’t give a **** about my SC and I’m just dreaming

I believe most Porsche dealers realize there is a market for the vintage models and would be happy to take your car in trade.

A couple years ago I saw a very nice air cooled Turbo for sale on the floor at Porsche North Scottsdale.

Edit: Just remembered - about ten years ago I saw a very nice 3.2 Carrera for sale at a Honda dealer. I was tempted to buy it (I wish I did). I recall after a test drive I checked the oil and it was way over full. I told them how to check the oil (they had no clue). I asked if they would take my 911SC in trade and they said yes. I think dealers will buy/sell anything if there is money to be made.

Yea true. I gotta figure out what they use to come up with trade in value. KBB probably? I haven’t looked at that to see how KBB values these cars. I wonder if they are comparable to BAT sales history

I briefly looked into that when I was selling my middie but didn't go as far as making real inquiries. Some Porsche dealers have a classics service department, they might be more conversant with the air cooled models.

Also how many DMs have you already got from sketchy characters saying "$35k cash. CASH. RIGHT NOW. I'LL COME TOMORROW. CASH".

You want to find a Porsche Classic dealer. Manbridge74 is with Porsche of Colorado Springs and they get some nice air cooled cars there through their showroom.

If I sell it, I want it to be simple like when I bought it. Saw it in the paper..classifieds. drove to guys house after work. Went back the next day with a check. No stupid PPi. No arranging transport across the country etc…

Classic dealer would be great but there are none here that specialize in Porsche. The prior owner of my car bought it from Sloan. I know they are still around, or were….but too far from me

I’ve been in and out of the market for a bit. Been burned by sellers, had a bad PPI, watched the market go bananas…all that stuff.

If you want to sell it to a normal person, PCA member just looking for a solid car and fair deal feel free to PM me. I won’t bother you otherwise, but I can promise you I would do everything possible to make it easy because there’s no reason not to.

For those writing to me. Thanks. But as I said above, I won’t be ready to let it go for at least a year I haven’t accepted not having it yet if you know what I mean.

Talk to Christian at Porsche Clifton Park, he knows the value of air-cooled cars really well. They routinely have a few for sale. He personally owns an 84 Carrera and a 928. He's a good dude, many people have met him when they set up at our yearly open house.

Our small Porsche dealer in Spokane has consigned older cars for customers and may be taking them on trade. It is certainly worth asking a few dealers in your broader geographic area. Our local PCA does a cars and coffee monthly at the dealership. Maybe something similar where you are. It would be a great opportunity to drive the car there and talk to a few sales folks.

When Matt says classic dealer, I think he's referring to Porsche Classic Partner or Dealership where they have a designation from Porsche to deal with all things "old" Porsche's.

That’s correct. I wasn’t suggesting send it to C Springs. I was offering them as an example. Somewhere like Paul Miller would be the equivalent out there.

You - well the OP since you are half the country away - may find that particular dealership to be less generous than you’d wish when it comes to valuing your trade - as well as being extremely proud of their own inventory.

So if you're a year or more away from selling, why are you posting this now?
Why not wait until you are ready?

Sorta off topic, but sometimes I think I’ll be stuck with my old Porsches for life.
Because there is no way someone else would enjoy driving an old manual everything, cracking leather, rear main dripping, car like I do… they will just low ball me because they don’t get it.

Sounds like you love it. Also sounds like someone else would too. Although Never hurts to start fresh. Do you feel if you started new; you would have to go through all the same things you did with your last Porsche? Have you and your sc ever thought about couples counseling? Worked wonders with mine.

Sounds like you’d miss her…
Mine actually came back to me 10 years later and we worked things out.
All the best. ❤️

Because it’s just how my brain works. I want to think about my options. What’s the difference? I’m not asking for anyone to make an offer on my car. I asked what I thought was a straight forward question

The only transaction I’m interested in is turning mine into cash in order to put that cash into a brand new cayman. There should be nothing to do with a new car. I do love it but I’m not getting any younger and I would like to experience something else.

I totally get it. Old cars can be, um, trying. I don't drive mine even a thousand miles a year usually. They sit in the garage on chargers doing nothing. Heaters are balky. Non-existent A/C. Hand to hand maintenance. Trying. But I love them.

I recently bought a new, modern, fun car. Very refreshing to own and drive. Wife even likes it. I've decided to have it both ways.

Did you try to trade in an old car there? If so, we would love to hear about your experience. That sort of direct experience is the meat and potatoes of a thread like this. Did they refuse your trade in as not nice enough, yet still try to sell you a new car?
