1984 Carrera values a myth??

Did not even make it to $12K. I see others like this. Now I think I over paid for my Carrera.

Perhaps Ebay is just not the best place to find a buyer. Any ideas on making a good sale for this nice car?

I think eBay buyers are looking for bargains. (I know I do.) And with 150k miles on the odo, most people won't commit much cash w/o being able to see the car, etc. There are too many lower mileage early 3.2s in the same price range you're asking.

I think being in California may drive down the values.
There are plenty of P-cars and other exotic sports cars to pick from in your area without having to travel too far.

Gas prices will aso put a damper on the market and we will be gearing up for another hurricane season this summer

I would never buy a car form ebay unless It was local and I was able to test drive it.

On the East Coast they go for a bit more since they are not as many were sold out here and winters take out a few each year.

Mileage does not bother me as long as all the major compenants in in good working order or freshened up. I would not buy an SC unless the head studs and valve guides and clutch have been replaced unless it is going for real cheap.

I think $15-16,500 would be a fair price over here.

For argument sake, I paid $10k for my 84 Carrera close to 3 years ago. It is a Targa which I have heard commands a lesser value. My car had a rebuilt transmission and 176,000 miles. I didn't run a PPI and with luck ended up with a near perfect car. In 3 years, I have changed brakes, tires, oil and that's it exclusive of upgrades and the car has been perfect. If I had to buy another which I have to tell myself no several times a day, I would pay up to $14k depending on options and Fuchs (I have 15s now).

I agree. $150K is a bunch of miles, and the engine may be nearing having some work needed on it. $13K would probably be a good price, depending upon the condition of the paint and interior. Condition is everything, and can be the sole difference between a $12K car and a $20K car...

Odd that it has 15s on them as far as I know, they were never sold here in the US with 15s - that was the standard Euro wheel...

My car has so many slightly different options than any other 84 that I have seen. Automatic Heating Control unit, 15 fuchs and other subtle different look options when compared against earlier 84s. The 15s might have been custom. I have almost all the documents and nothing shows a switch even the sticker in the engine bay lists 15s.

The 15s were standard equipment on the Carrera, but most (I thought "all") the US dealers ordered them with the upgraded 16" Fuchs. I'm not sure, but I think they came with some Air Conditioning package? Or maybe that was a different car/year. Don't remember. Typically, the euro dealers sold the cars with the standard equipment (15s).

I just bought my 84 Euro Carrera Cab with 94,000 on the clock in very good condition needing minor interior work, with a/c and 15 inch wheels $10,500 from a fellow pelcian.

Based on the VIN you posted on Ebay, it is a US model car. The VINs for the coupe fall within this range -

WPOAB091CES120001-2282 - 2282 models produced.
Out of that line - It looks like you have #1018. The 15s on a Carrera are less desirable IMO but I didn't know when I bought my car nor does it bother me.

I bought my car for the price I did because the owner was threatening to put it on Ebay. I have to come to think of Ebay as a place for a good deal or for a purchaser who doesn't necessarily know what they are getting into. You should be able to get at least $12k for what you have. Have you tried PCA advertising? or even Autotrader? You have to find the right buyer and their is one. Also, list on Pelican classifieds which you might have already done and other board classifieds. Also, consider Craigslist.

I think you have the wheel story a bit off.

Back in '84 (at least) Porsche made both the 15" and 16" wheel sizes available. The 15's were the "comfort" wheels I guess verses the 16" sport(?) wheels. My '84, also a US car, came with the 15" comfort wheels as well. I don't believe they were all that rare as the numbers you are seeing on this thread would seem to confirm.

Dad has an '84 carrera cab that he took European delivery on, 15" tires, Air conditioning. Had the entire thing redone, interior(seats, carpet and dash), new top, paint, body and top seals, rebuilt motor(top end only as I recall) He spent something north of $17,000 for all that and it took like a month. Looks better than new now though, of course he would never sell it, so it does not matter what it is worth.

I'm thinking of going through my '85 the same as your dad did Tobra and probably spending similar money. I've owned my car for 12 years and have no intention of selling it. I guess my one problem with the whole idea is the possibility of it being crashed.

That is always a possibility when you drive however we like to think that it isn't. But it shouldn't stop you from enjoying your car and spending money on her. In 12 years, you haven't crashed, why would you start now?

Most of the US cars were ordered with 16" wheels, and many of the European cars have the 15" wheels on them, which is what I have seen over the years...

Sorry to dredge up an aging thread... However, my 1984 Carrera was ordered without any wheel upgrade and was delivered with 15" Phone Dials as standard equipment.
