Value of this 67
http://jeremica.googlepages.com/1967Porsche911
I'm trying to valuate this 67. Looks well sorted mechanically, but it needs paint an rust repair. Making the big assumption that this is the extent of the rust issues, how much should one estimate the cost of repairing the rust? Would 6K be too far off for paint?? With that in mind what's a fair price for this car? Thanks in advance, Paul |

The floor of the pre-69 cars are covered in a thick layer of horse hair or something like that. It holds water and puts it right on the floor pan. Thus the rust. What he is showing you on the passenger side probably is all over the pan. If it is only on the surface then you can clean it up and POR-15 it. But it may be through in other places like the rockers and under the pedal cluster unit and that is not good. You must see the car in person to know for sure. The early early cars rust like mad, he basically says that in his ad. It is pointless to put money into an early car that has rust above a certain level (not much). It is like cancer and can't be stopped, money down the drain. From the pictures the paint looks fine but again you cannot tell from digital pictures taken more than a foot away.

The cowl rust is a real pain. It is for sure all around the lower part of the windshield and the cowl. Not an easy fix but typical. The bottom of the doors is starting to rust out. Not an easy fix. Under the back windshield too probably where the water puddles in the corners. Not an easy fix. I'll bet the bottom of the smuggler's box is rusted out too. What about the front pan? If it's rusted there he isn't going racing as it holds his front suspension together and no tech will pass the car for a race. The paint is thick that's why it's cracking like that. What was the original color? Ask for the paint tag numbers, we can help translate. The motor looks great but it isn't stock of course. Figure the motor and trans is worth at least $2500 to somebody, maybe as much as another $1k more. The fenders and hoods and wheels and seats maybe another $2k. Call it $4k in parts. Add $2k for the fact it's assembled and running? $6k would not be expensive for an early 911 in good running condition but it will be difficult to sell in the future because of the rust. If you drive it for a few years and then sell it quickly for $4k or $5k you can consider the $1k or $2k the cost of owning an early Porsche. I doubt he will sell it for $6k, he has a lot in it and will want to get some out. Bet he is asking nearer $10k which is not reasonable given the rust. It's not the paint, paint can be fixed, it's the rust. If it wasn't rusty he could sell it to the Europeans as is for near $10k. But they will not touch a rusty car. They have been burned a million times and won't even go near rust.
