frankenstein 80 SC is it worth it?
Hey guys,
I think i ask more advice from the fourm then i have my parents as a child! Here we go. I am considering buying a 80SC minus the engine. ![]() Needs paint Misc cracks on the dash some minor rusting by the windshield and door jam Southern car (NC) He is asking 4k? He is leaving the 915 in the car. Do you think this is a worth while project? I would be doing almost all/ if not all work myself. Thanks AGAIN! and again, Andrew |

You are looking to get your first Porsche, right? Don't get it this way, trust me. You can do all your own work, but do you feel you can do it right.
Lots of guys will say it's not rocket science and it's not. But it is different and you will likely mess it up the first time. Mess up a running car a little than a non-running car a lot. Buy the nicest, newest car you can afford. If I were to do it all over again, I would buy a cream puff SC and keep it around. Sure, it wouldn't be the newest, trendiest car but it will be solid for a long time if you take care of it. That being said, my first 911 was a 3.2L Carrera (which I still have) and I am trying to sell an SC to get a 996. Do as I say, not as I do...... BTW, a good 3.0L is 4-5k. Paint is 2-20k. Some things just cost what they cost.

Well i left some things out. I will be working with the guidence of a porsche legend Peter Dawe, he owns a shop called Dawes Motorsports and it country known. So the work doesnt scare me at all. His shop is about a 5 min walk from my shop.
As for the paint, i have painted quite a few cars, so i am sure i can paint it with little trouble. I have fabricated a few clean rooms at our shop too. Basically is the chassis minus the engine worth 4k? Edit!! Also, my intentions are not to restore the car original, but rather convert it to c2 style, nice OEM cup wheels and some performance goodies. thanks so much for your guidence! Andrew |

I would shop around to see how much it would cost you to gather up along block, fuel system, clutch, possible tranny rebuild, brake work (calipers probably seized from sitting), wheels, tires, suspension work and go from there.
There is someone who has a used 964 motor for sale on the parts forum for $6,500. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=314073&highlight=motor or this 3.2 motor http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=303034&highlight=motor Here is a targa in the DC area for $2,000 with a motor http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/showthread.php?t=11482

Heck, if you're looking for a project, and have the support of a pro--jump in! This hobby is fun! Lots of fun. You can get slaughtered financially, but you know that going in. Don't you??

$2500. That gives you $9,500 to spend to get to the current market value of a quality SC (in So Cal at least).
Of course, it will be the next $9,500 when things get painful. ![]()

Read the book "The gold plated Porsche" it talks about a guy
who spent 100k on an SC worth 10k AFTER restoration. Then run away, as fast as you can!

Andrew, if you don't buy this car, let me know. I'd be interested. Very nice color.

My 2 cents is find a better deal. A 10K running SC in California that is rust free and in need of some minor cosmetics is a better option than a 3500 rusty roller without an engine, and a cracked interior. After you bought the car you would be on a rust hunt and finding rust is a depressing experience that i know first hand. Have you removed the headlights, looked in the wheel wells real closely, Checked the area aroudn the front bumper brackets, check behind the evaporator in the drivers side wheel well closely. I say keep your 3500 close to you and let this one go.
