Buying an SC--should I?
I've reached an agreement on a US 1983 911 SC Targa. I'm buying from the original owner and the sales aggreement, window sticker and most of the documentation are available, especially the more recent stuff. The car has 46.000 garaged miles, is in very nice shape, glossy gold over brown, but has no updates (original tensioners, clutch, studs and no pop-off). We've settled on $14.000. Assuming a good PPI is this reasonable, a steal or should I run? It obviously seems a good deal to me but 911 values seem to be all over the lot right now and SC's seem to have started seriously lagging Carreras. My original intent was to try to find a carrera at this price, not pristine but good condition and under 90K miles which should be doable with patience, but the milage and condition seem exceptional on this car. I'd appreciate some input--or perhaps just some handholding.
thanks Russell |

Low-mile first owner, original car. Would fetch around 15-17K euro here, maybe more, which is close to 20K dollars. But these are european prices...

I think the price is close if its in great condition.. Keep in mind you ll have to do teh updates...so thats more mula.
As i have recently figured out.. these are all $20k cars.. pay now..or pay later. I think you should settle on the car you want first. If you really want a carrera.... $17K to $20 k will buy you a nice example... youll have that much in that car anyhow. I would not buy this car and neglect the updates like the tensioners.. I think thats just gambling

Regardless of price:
1) Do you like the car? 2) Do you like the color combo? 3) Does it pass a PPI? If you really want a Carerra, hold out for one. If you were on the fence of Carerra or SC, then this one may fit the bill. I DO beleive that these are 20K cars. You would want a Pop-off valve and updated tensioners installed. This will not break the bank. Get it done and enjoy your "new" car for years to come ![]() 911 values are all over the place because of their age which makes "condition" everything. The rattier, the cheaper.

I can tell from your posting that you really want a Carrera. If so,
get it. I just passed on an 189k-mile Carrera for 13k, it had a rebuild on the motor and clutch, but it also had a few oddities such as a dent, a missing engine pad, a buzzing sound in the dash, etc. But the price was good. Carreras for around 105k can be had for 17-18k, and I know of a 55k Carrera mint, going for only 23k. Also decide if you really want a Targa- a while ago I decided not only no more SCs, but also no more Targas. Targas leak and I don't like how they look from behind. To each his own. But get what you want. As everyone says you will soon have 20k in it, so you might was well get what you wanted in the first place.
