What's wrong with this picture?
Hi there,
A fellow pelicanite posted the following on the sales board: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=336862 Seems that he's found a 95 C2 coupe for $18K....should I expect that this is a salvage title or maybe in need of major work? Unless there's a typo in there, I didn't think a 993 could be had for less than $30ish?... |

Higher mileage car. It might need work, PPI would tell this.. Or it could just be that the owner wants to get it sold quickly. I came close to buying a 993 for $19,000 that was a clean, but higher mileage car. The original owner was a doctor and he just wanted to get it sold. It was sold to someone else before I had the chance to look at it..

Very high mileage Porsches can be nearly unsellable. Ask me how I know.

Apparently the mileage is 115,000 miles....for a 95, is that considered too high?
The reason I ask is that I'm looking for a 3.2 in that price range and was somewhat surprised at the asking price for this 993... Anyhow, thanks for the replies - I've sent a note to the seller for more info; I'll let you know if there's anything interesting out of it.... |

Blue book on that car is in the $18K range. Not everyone knows the enthusiast market will pay more.
Detroit's economy is not exactly booming either. Did you call, any news?

There was one that recently sold on Rennlist for less than 20k. I would buy this one in minute if I didn't already own one. Those miles are nothing to be afraid of.

Don't some 993's get a CEL and it requires a valve job or something before it will pass emissions? I probably have this askew, but there is some kind of expensive issue possible. Not saying this car has any problems, but worth going slowly.

It's called the 'secondary air problem' and the CEL is the indication that you have one. It can happen as early as 50K miles, but doesn't tend to recur once it's fixed.

Nothing obviously wrong with the car from the pictures, except that it is white. Detroit isn't the boom area these days, so someone may just have a fire sale. Note that RUST is an issue, as Detroit is just about in the center of the rust belt. It won't have holes in it yet, but it will have taken it's toll already.
You won't know unless you check out the car. 115k miles is not "high mileage" in my book. The car is 12 years old! George |

Thanks for your comments everyone - the seller has just responded to my initial enquiry, however he did not forward any further information, just a note advising that he was showing the car this weekend on Sunday and Monday. I've asked for more details about the condition of the car, more pics and some details about the history.
Given that I'm about an 8 hour drive from the seller, I may need to find a Pelican-Friend in Northern Michigan who might want to have a look for me - but only once more details are provided from the seller....no sense in wasting someone's time if the car is a dead-end. Dave |

As a point of reference (if it helps), a friend here picked up a 97 with 100k miles in CA for 24000 and change. Car is near perfect but has some miles....
Cheers

Dave, I to have followed this car and finally received the same vague info on specs (Interior wear=30% drivers seat? good oil pressure, Original body and hard top w/ moon roof) after 2 weeks of silence and an open invitation to visit it this weekend. Says he is going overseas and has to unload. He gave me the VIN# WP0AA2990SS322000 if anyone can run it and see if it is worth pursuing. I requested detailed pics and will let you know if he supplies them. Seems a little too fishy but you never know.

Some people just don't deal well with the internet. Some people can not even type at reasonable speed, which impairs them. I would just go see the car and get it over with. It may be a good deal. Will be interesting to see what the VIN info is ...

The car does not look too good in the carfax. There is an odometer issue (14k missing), it's been registered as a fleet vehicle late in life and has had 4 owners. It's only been in the rustbelt area as well, so unfortunately not a CA returner. Last owner had it for 3+ years. It still may be an excellent buy, but when it's time to resell, the carfax will hurt you, even if the possible roll back is an error.
Hope this helps , George |
