Selling options
What are the pros and cons of selling a car on E Bay versus private ads or through a dealer or specialist ? What are the other options ? I have a 1970 911s I need to sell this spring....Understandably I'm looking to get the best return I can...
Thanks for your help ! |

I would consider Ebay, but don't take it too seriously, because likely you will not sell it through the ebay auction. It will be a good way to advertise the car though.
Other places are this board, the early S board, Rennlist, local and national PCA, craigslist and pay places as well, i.e. trader online. I always look for a smooth and quick local sale and price my vehicles reasonable. I always sell in under about a week. A good write up and some good pictures will be very helpful. George |

Thanks George. Did you ever consider selling through a classic car dealer ?

Yes, I had considered using a classic car dealer to sell my 71 Corvette Roadster. Most the consigment stores will have you tell them your bottom line and they promise to get you that. Then they add some ridiculous number to it and put it on the show room floor. If it does not sell in a reasonable amount of time, they will ask you to reconsider your asking price (of course they will not reconsider their cut). Unless you find a consignment dealer that works under different principles, they are a waste of time. These dealerships will get you access to the buyers that need financing, but that's about the only value added.
George edit: That roadster I sold showed up at the local consignment store only months after the sale. It was marked up 12k from what I sold it for. It has not sold in over 4 months now. I doubt it will for their asking price. After the dealer takes their cut, the seller may be happy to get out even. Last edited by aigel; 04-09-2007 at 03:22 PM.. |
