930 Reliable?

First off, hello everyone! I am a dealer just outside Toronto, Canada. I am looking for a turbo car for a customer. His budget is 40K Canadian dollars. Everyone I have asked suggests I look for a 84 to 89 930 with the 89 being the target. Is this good advice? He doesn't have deep pockets, are these cars reliable if properly maintained compared to other porsches at that price? He's looking for best bang for his dollar. Thanks in advance.

more expensive to maintain than a non-turbo car. best bang for buck[my opinion] would be an early car with a late model engine.
there are a couple of 3.6 powered cars for sale right now. stock high power engine in light car =reliability, lots of fun, and no turbo lag.

Thanks. Unfortunately he wants the rush of a turbo car. If we are talking just turbos are the 84-89's better than early 80's or early 90's? Like I said, I'm not at all an expert; would the non turbo lightweight car give the same feel? Is the handling any different if stock set up? Thanks again.

930

You will be hard pressed to find a good car in Canada for $40,000. I had to import from the states to find the right car. If you buy a 87 or older car, you won't have to worry about emission compliance. 1989's had a G50 5 speed Trans and are worth quite a bit of a premium. I believe the clutches were hydraulic starting in 87. My 86 is a cable clutch 930 4 speed. They work great as long as the syncros are taken care of. I think the interiors and brakes were updated in 86, somebody correct me if I am wrong.

Use the search button on the top right of the screen. There is a lot of info about these cars on this board. Good luck!

Cheers

If you want to play, you have to pay. $40K canadian is about what today.. $32k USD? It would be hard to find an '89 for that money. A pre G50 could be found for that money. Many turbos have been molested for the joy of the boost bong. The more boost you want, the less reliable you get. More than about 350hp usually means needing a twin plug head ($$$$) bigger fuel injectors, larger intercooler etc and NONE of that is cheap stuff.

A 3.6 stuffed in a narrow body car, or even one with turbo flares, would be a much more reliable car, overall, imho.

Thanks everyone! After reading your replies and doing some 930 research he is at least open to the idea of a 3.6 transplant car. That just leads to more problems for me though. Now I need to identify a good base car with quality work done to it. I will read alot of stuff on this site and see what I can learn. Thanks again!

For some reason, good 930's are cheaper in the US. My experience is that the price cannot be adjusted to only the exchange rate. My car cost about 37.000 cdn after duty, taxes and licensing. If you buy a good original 930 in Canada, you are looking at $45,000 with good mileage and proper paperwork. Add both taxes (if purchased from a dealer) and you are easily over 50,000.

As far as a 3.6 transplant car, they are quick but don't have the blast of a 930 (IMHO). 930's are a reliable car if maintained and not turbo'd out of your driveway when cold.

If I was brokering a car for a customer, the first place I would look is the north eastern US. You are only 8 hrs to New York, Connecticut, NJ etc. Good cars come up on this board frequently. The process to import is very easy.

Cheers

Thanks for the input. I would deffinately be looking for a US car. I already have a importing license so that is no obstacle. Since I last posted the customer has decided it is a 930 he wants. I now have until September to find him something nice and in the right price range. Thanks again everyone!

If he's open to 3.6 transplant and a cab, this car in my area looks great and is a great price, considering what it probably cost to do it. I've never seen it in person, though.
