What's too much to pay for an SC?
A friend of mine recently bought an 1978 SC coupe with 146k miles, engine completely rebuilt including the updated air box pop off valve and carrera chain tensioners. The car was originally a green color but was repainted black (professionally done, but probably not a 'factory' correct color) it's more of a gloss black rather than a metallic black (like Hal's).
Anyway, the car doesn't have original seats and (probably) didn't come with the rear spoiler on it. The guy ended up paying $17k for it. That seems a little high to me. It might not be, but then again, as a comparison, there's a local '78 SC targa with 59k orig. miles and new paint in the paper for $14,500, and I'm not sure I'd go much higher than that for a car with 146k miles on it. I know people say that SC engines can last up to 200k miles and beyond, if properly taken care of, but it seems like you can get a decent Carrera 3.2 for $17k these days... I don't know. What do you guys think? Is $17k too much to pay for an SC?

I'ts all up to what the buyer likes and is wiling to pay.
Prices are all over the place depending on location and condition of the car.

More than I would have paid, especially in light of the non-factory color change. And that's assuming the engine rebuild was documented as being done by a reputable shop.

I paid 16k for my SC, but it had 3000 miles on a complete engine and tranny rebuild, 80K total.

If it is a good runner, that will offset the high purchase price.

Nice SC's are around for under $10k, more like $7-8. Add a
$6000. engine rebuild (or transplant for less) and you've got a documented winner. Chassis mileage is not a deal breaker, as they're easy to refresh for not a lot of $$.

While 17K may be high, if there are good records and PPI notices nothing very wrong, it could still be an "ok deal".
I still stand behind the "every 911 (SC/3.2 Carerra) is a $20K car".. it just depends how you want to get there! ![]()

That would be an okay price if it was restored back to original. Color change and non original options will bring it down. Sounds like a 14k car to me too.

Excellence magazine is just not accurate. It does not reflect street prices, at least not here in the Bay Area.

A friend of mine is selling a 1980 with 46K miles, some documentation on the car. nice paint and interior sport seats and he can't get anywhere close to the 16K he is asking. I think the car is worth around 13-14K. so 17K is kind of high due to the high millage

The prices should go up a bit, it's inflation, everything is going up now.
Gas, food, housing is up. And now Beer prices in Germany are going way up due to crops being diverted for Ethanol ![]() Porsche consignment shop by me has sold a few SC's in very nice condition with mileage around 110,000 miles for $16,000 & up. Carrera's are going for the low 20's. They even sold a pair of 951's earlier this year one for $14,000 and the other for $17,000 ![]()

Dealer (toy store) prices are always high. They offer financing (and lots of silicone all over the car), that's why they charge more.

The thing about selling a car is that you almost never end up with more money than the asking price. I know that sounds obvious, the point being ask for the moon and let the market determine the final price. If you sell your car or your house in a week or even a month, then you probably didn't get your best price.
If the seller has the time and likes to meet a bunch of potential tire kickers, aim high initially and find common ground later. I sold my '81 Euro SC last October. It was only advertised here and in a small ad on Craigslist. It sold in 2 weeks and I had 3 buyers lined up with cash in hand at my asking price of $14,550. While it appears the car could have brought a higher price, I don't enjoy selling stuff and only dealt with those that responded that I thought were serious. In the end, I was happy and the new owner and family elated. Don't underestimate the value of a quality 911. Car in question is in my sig. Last edited by TerryH; 06-09-2007 at 05:17 AM.. |

You guys are making me a little nervous. I just paid $14k for a '79 with about 142k miles here in SoCal. Paint and interior are in excellent condition (interior+window seals are completely redone), it has new Bilstein sport susp., strong engine and tranny -- but not rebuilt (AFAIK). No compression or leakdown (the car passed smog 30 days ago).
Oh well, what's done is done... I'm propping up the market! |

Nothing to get nervous about, Dan, unless you are planning on selling next week. It often depends on the specific example, but for 10k there isn't anything out there that is cosmetically nice and needs nothing. So, 4k more and you get a car that is in very good condition ...

I noticed in Excellence that the values of SC's crept up by a few hundred dollars from the prior year and the 84-86 Carreras dropped down a small amount.
G-50 Carreras went up.
