Excellence - '78-'89 911 Values?
Anybody looked at the recent values of the mid-market 911's published in Excellence magazine this month? They look way too high from what I see in the market. Don't get me wrong - I am the owner of one of these cars and I would like to think my car is worth what they say it is but these numbers are not consistent with my perception - what do you think?

What do they say about a 1983 SC Cabriolet (European model). I have one I'm selling soon with 175K miles on it. Thanks.

Just got my copy today. Yep, values seem way too high.
My excellent condition 100K Carrera 1986 is supposedly worth 28K. I paid 15K a month ago. |

IMHO 15k sounds like a decent deal, of course I dont know the car but 28k is a joke

They do seem optimistic. Really exceptional cars might get the high values with the right buyer, though.
New PML is just out and has early 'S' values pretty high, too. True that some go for 60-80K or more, but most seem to trade for less. SCM had an article about this phenomenon -- basically stating that everyone thinks their car is 'excellent,' while a true 100 point car is the rare exception, with incredible attention to detail.

Now in 993 land ...

IMHO Excellence values are hogwash. They are always on the high side to make the magazine readers (90% Porsche owners) feel good. Of course, watch me quote Excellence when I sell.

With a lot of patience and a local buyer who has time to really get comfortable with the car, I think one might get about 85-90% of what Excellence is saying a "good" condition car will fetch. For rapid or distant (internet) sale, I'm thinking probably more like 75-80% of "good" -- and forget "excellent." I believe they had my car up in the low 30's for "excellent." Watching Ebay for a feel of the market, the lower mileage (under 100K) 3.2 Carreras that actually sell are in the $14K (suspect, with ratty interiors) to $19K (very nice) range. I believe the values have bounced at least once before, so they may bounce a little again, but I wouldn't expect to see one appreciate to what Excellence says they're worth -- may get there due to inflation some day.
