Missing VIN Plate
With a pre-70 911 having three different VIN identifiers, how important that one VIN plate is missing? How would this affect value of the car (if at all)?
Car in question is missing the silver tag under the hood. Paint tag with VIN still there. |

Most likely this is the result of a front clip repair / repaint. If the work was done well, the missing VIN plate is not that big of a deal. You should be able to get a replacement from PCNA. You will have to take the car to a Porsche dealer to authenticate it, and they can order a replacement - about $70 I think.

1968 and earlier models did NOT have the windshield post VIN tag...it arrived in 1969.

As stated, it's probably not too big a deal, especially if the remaining vin#s match, wherever you find them. You didn't identify the car year, but some 69's didn't have the tag on the windshield post (I had one that didn't), and some cars didn't have the vin on the paint tag either. I would be sure to check the stamped vin in the luggage area, between the gas tank and smuggler's box and see if it matches the one on the paint tag--most likely it will unless the whole front clip had been replaced.

Car is a 67S and the remaining VINs match (smugglers box and paint tag) as well as matching engine and transmission numbers (according to CoA as well). |

the front aluminum plate seems to go missing on a LOT of cars. stamped #'s are what matter. you'll also have the # stamped on the dash lower, the doors, fenders, and the engine lid.

CAUTION. You can NO LONGER source the early 911 aluminum vin tags from Porsche.
I found this out the hard way after I had already bought a Porsche that needed one. The story is that the die wore out and Porsche did not find it worthwhile to replace it. They sold their supply and that is it. [In fairness to Porsche, I cannot blame them. They have taken a bath on many of the parts that they have made available to restorers. Example: RSL front and rear bumpers.] I have seen some on the market, usually from Germany or UK and usually VERY expensive. I have heard of alleged replicas but I have never seen one that I could detect.. Most of the very few that are out there do not have the TYPE with the reverse stamping on them and I have no idea where one might get this done. Replicating the other numbers shouldn't be too big a deal. I have also heard that certain well know restoration experts have sources for all of this but no one is talking. GOOD LUCK and I say buy it if the other numbers are ok. John Rice |
