Beautiful car racer,

Hope all goes well. I have an 88 lined up, that I will hopefully take possession of next week. 113K mile coupe in Lagoon Green Metallic. Glad I waited, and passed on a few earlier choices, thanks to the helpful input of fellow pelicans.

Good luck.

Emerald

Racer, that is just awesome. Looks fantastic, great color, it's not blue but it look's blueish on that pic. I hope you'll be able to close this one. 43K miles, I bet you're glad you waited this long.

Emerald, that's great news. Of course, you must post pics when you get it.

Flat, no it's not pure blue but it is diamond blue metallic, which I've found, at least in pictures, I like better than the baltic blue that I saw at Holt. I would prefer the metallic Navy that was made in 89 but I bet those are really rare since I haven't seen one in the time I've been looking (for sale or not).

I'm not getting too excited until I see the car and it passes PPI. However, all of the elements are there so it looks good so far.

Nice looking car, good luck! Make sure they check the valve guilds with the PPI. From what I recall, 43.k miles is around when this issue becomes apparent.

Great color hope it all works out.

Great looking car RacerX! It's encouraging to see that you and Emerald are both close to a deal, it gives me some hope. As others have said, Good Luck!

Well, I just got back from looking at/driving the diamond blue coupe in MA (20 hours on the road out of the last 36!!!).

Provided it passes PPI, it's a done deal. The only concern I have is the 2nd gear synchro, which takes a bit more effort to get than the others. We'll see what the PPI shop has to say. The shop (EPE in Natick MA) came highly recommended so I trust their opinion on its health.

I'm ready to collapse so I'll just say that the car is a beauty! The paint has so few imperfections that it makes the Baltic Blue coupe at Holt look like it's been used for commuting down gravel roads. With the owner not being a car guy, it's good in that the car has been overmaintained (standing order with his wrench to do whatever he wants), but the car definitely needs a weekend with my Porter Cable and some nice carnauba.

I'll post pics of the car from today when it passes PPI. Don't want to jinx it.

BTW, if my car doesn't pass PPI, I've got dibs on the silver 3.2 that just went up for sale. That's a STEAL!!!!

Good news, Sean! Glad "somebody" talked you into driving up there!

BTW, it's been MY (albeit limited) experience that 2nd gear on these G50 cars feels a bit "notchy"; more so on the short shift-optioned cars, FWIW...

Yes, 'somebody' did me a great favor by convincing me to make the drive, Joe. Definitely worth the long hours behind the wheel....Thanks for the push!

We'll see what the PPI turns out on the trans. I asked the owner if it got 'crunchy' when it was cold and he told me it didn't. You may be right that's how these are. I'm with you in the lack of experience department.

I'll send you a note with the particulars when I wake up tomorrow and can put two words together. i.e. the most eloquent turn of phrase I can come up with right now is that I'm pretty stoked.

Collapsing now....

Gentlemen.

Now I'm considering an '89 Targa. Specs:
NY most of its life, now in NE
Claim of only 2 owners
Claim of 20k miles
Claim no leaks
No service records
Repainted 10 yrs ago

This last one and the ridiculously low mileage make me go "hmm". Current dealer wouldn't divulge about the repaint (I know because he bought it from a dealer whose ad mentioned the repaint was "only okay.") Why a repaint at 10 yrs? Accident?

When I spoke to him, I didn't reveal that I know about some of its history from a previous ad so I could get a feel for his honesty. He said he bought it from a P dealer, when in fact he bought from an indie dealer. I know he's trying to turn it around for a quick profit, sizeable I might add (I also know the max he paid from the previous dealer's asking price on their ad, which I still have...ha!).

And when mileage is that low, I get real nervous like the speedo stopped working or registering. They could have just fixed it before inspection time. Guess I won't know until I check it out.

"Repainted 10 yrs ago"?????
Why would a car with 20K miles need a repaint? Seems strange and unusual. Most of these cars have some paint work on them after 25years, but a car with only 20K miles that was stored? More to the story then what you may be being told, IMO.
The description of this car makes me think of one piece of advice that I would give....run forest, run then keep looking.
A p-car with only 20k miles should be as close to perfect as you can find.

I second trader220, the silver 87 looks like a solid deal if it checks out. If I was in the market, I would be looking hard @ that car before I would be talking to a possible "flipper" who is only offering sketchy details

I agree. 20,000 mile cars do not need a re-paint. Unless............................

Jumping on the bandwagon and saying run away from that car. The only way I would consider a car with that low mileage and a repaint is with some serious documentation that it hasn't been wrecked.

A repaint versus a clean carfax...I'd err on the side of caution.

I know! Had I not shaken hands with the owner on the diamond blue coupe the day before the silver one went up for sale, I think that car would be mine.

However, the diamond blue coupe appears to be worth the extra money I paid and it's a gorgeous car. Even Richard Sloan still wants it. Once I have the deal totally sealed one way or the other, I'll share my whole Richard Sloan story. It's actually a fun tale of the Porsche neophyte teaching the supposed expert a few things, like how to determine wheel diameter.

Getting anxious to close the deal. PPI is scheduled for tomorrow at 9:30 so I'll be counting the minutes until Jerry Pelligrino calls me from EPE.

Hating the fact I'll have to drive it back from Boston to PA but I haven't gotten one quote for enclosed shipping under $800. For that kind of money, I'll risk the drive, stay away from NYC, and borrow a friend's magbra.

I spoke with salesman from the previous dealer of the 89. The one who sold the current dealer the car. I liked the vibe I got from him. No offense to NY'ers, but I was expecting a Soprano sort of dude saying to me, "Fuggetta 'bout it, I sold it already. Don't worry 'bout nuthin!" He seemed straight up and calm (maybe because he sold the car already and didn't have any pressure).

His story: Needed repaint because a panel had a scratch. PO decided to paint the whole car. Paint job was only okay because there's overspray on the moldings, jambs. Poor prep job apparently. The car was in storage for awhile, didn't know how much. No service records. No leaks when he had it. He wasn't surprised when he heard how much the current dealer was asking$.

Strange. How many P owners are really going to repaint the WHOLE car for just a scratch on one panel when there's less than 20k miles?

Before I say no-go to this car, I'm going to have someone take a look at it for me. If it looks like it should at 20k miles, then I might investigate further. The low mileage is a good thing, but I'm still very suspicious of it. Why get a Porsche, then only drive it 1000miles/year? Just doesn't fit.

In the BREAKING CRAPPY NEWS department, thank goodness for PPI's. I just got off the phone with Jerry at EPE regarding the diamond blue car I was in the process of making mine.

Leakdown showed 20-30% on two of the cylinders plus a number of other small issues with seals, gaskets, and a hole in the floor. All said and done, $8-9k worth of repairs on the car. Haven't spoken to the owner yet to decide what's next. In all fairness, I don't think the owner knew for one second that the car had all these issues. He's not a car guy and Boston Sports Car works on a lot of other makes so it would have been easy for them to miss these things.

Considering the car is such a looker with pristine original paint and very nice interior, I'd still be interested in purchasing it. The question is whether my new offer will be acceptable to the owner. With an $8-9k range of stuff required, my offer dropped by $10k.

Glad it was caught but I'm bummed out since she's such a babe. Will obviously keep the board updated as things occur ad nauseum.

Sorry to hear the news racer. I went up to Pittsburgh to check on the car I was refered to by a fellow pelican. Drove her home to Franklin Tennessee, what a sweet ride home.
She has 113K miles, but I wanted a daily driver. I wanted a good engine and transmission, and a good body. I found what I wanted, and even got a color I think is amazing. She is Laguna Green Metallic, with grey leather. This is my first Porsche, and I couldn't be happier, and I owe it to all the support and input from this board.
Thanks for all the help.

Cheers,
Emerald

Excellent Emerald! That's great news that one of us had success on our potential purchase. That's a sharp looking color too. Glad to see something other than guards red or black. I've wanted a good body for years and never seem to get there

I'm still dumbfounded on how 'my' car could have so many issues for being so pristine. Hell, I was fighting Richard Sloan for the damned thing and you'd think he'd know better. Richard and I traded notes tonight and comiserated on neither getting what we wanted out of the car. He still wants to make some money off of me so I have another set of eyes looking for the right car.

Enjoy your new baby. Seeing your in TN, you'll still have another two months to play with it.
