Yes, it really is a beautiful car. I've made an offer on it but I think Tim's playing the waiting game. I'm hoping he doesn't think that I'm going to counter his counter. Right or wrong, when I make an offer on a car, that's the offer; it doesn't go up and I have no problem walking away from the car if the offer isn't met. I'll go on record as saying the offer was quite fair.

And, while he has a good reputation, a PPI will be done.

I've chatted with a few other sellers and need to follow up there.

I'm almost getting a kick out of some folks selling Silver Editions (I just chatted with one a few moments ago). They believe their cars are super rare when, in fact, if you own an 89 coupe in the US, there's a 30% chance that it's a Silver Edition. My read is there are a fair number nice examples of those floating around. I believe those who bought them were more inclined to take care of them because they were 'special'. In fact the Baltic blue coupe that Tim has is significantly more rare since there were only 47 of those made.

Racer, I purchased my 89 G50 coupe in Metallic Forest Green from Tim in January which is a special order color, do you have any idea how many were made in that color? Just curious because you had the number on the Baltic Blue.
Thanks,
Fishman7

No, I only know of the Baltic blue number because someone on Rennlist has one and sent me a note when he saw I was looking at one. I think you could get that from PNA with a certificate of authenticity.

I saw that car on Tim's site in the sold section. It's absolutely gorgeous! If you're getting tired of it, let me know

Hey RacerX1166 & Emerald,

I thought I'd join in since I'm also looking. RacerX, I couldn't agree more on the Anniversary Edition cars. BTW, I've seen and driven the one in NJ listed in PCA Mart. It's a nice car and the owner seems like a straight up guy, but the price is too high.

I was originally looking exclusively for a G50, but have since considered a 915 car as a possibility. Emerald, think about it, the extra $$ saved could be used for some nice mods

Good Luck to both of you!

I dont think he's going to counter your offer or make any other himself. He's been in business a long time and from what I can tell he has no problem holding onto a car like that one and waiting for a buyer. A PPI is irrelevant if you're far apart in price.

It's his business and he can obviously run it the way he wants to. Perhaps he will be able to sell the car for what he believes it's worth. If he can, more power to him.

However, he's still a used car dealer and there's not another outlet of nicer Porsches in the area so he knows his competition is pretty slim. With that knowledge, why would he expose his best price right up front? It's not as though I walked out of his showroom and stopped by 3 similar establishments on the way home. Only he knows what his carrying cost is on the car and what other interest he's had in it. Ultimately, he will make a business decision.

As a buyer, while I like that color a lot, it's just not worth the premium to me. If he meets my price, great, I'd love to have the car. If he doesn't, I'll find something else that will make me just as happy since I'd actually prefer a darker blue.

Your last sentence was pretty self-evident I think.

Speaking with Tim not all that long ago, and prior to me leaving the business of trading to sell Porsche's one thing he noted is that in todays age most of his clients are not walk ins or even from the area. His clients are all over the country these days, and he knows the market for these cars as well as anyone I have ever met. That in conjunction with his established reputation for picking the cream of the crop in cars and being honest allows him to get the prices he wants.

Tim's a nice guy and a fair guy, at least in the 6 or 7 years I have come to know him. I have never bought a car from him, and I dont get a thing for sending him any business. I did sell my RSA to him back 6 or so years ago and that was my only formal business with him.

Just a note, if he "believes its worth" a price then it probably is and thats probably pretty close to what he'll end up getting.

If you showed him your top bid and he didn't hit it then I suspect you're better off looking for another car. These cars are not all that rare and I am sure you'll find one to your liking at a price you can live with.

I've moved on with the assumption that Tim won't meet my price so no issue there. It just happened that his shop was not far from my home and had a car that I was interested in so he was my first stop.

I would tend to debate the knowing the market aspect. If I, along with several others, have somewhat in demand widgets and all similar widgets are priced at $1million but mine are priced at $1.5million. If someone comes along and pays me $1.5million for one of the widgets I have, did I just sell at market price or did I play the law of averages and get the inevitable occasional bluebird because of how I positioned myself as a widget expert?

The flaw in that logic is that no two used cars are identical, where as in your story you assume the widgets are identical. In addition you're talking about selling an occasional widget and not running a business for many years selling cars and building a reputation. Look the guy knows the business of selling air cooled Porsches and he knows the market in them. If you believe his prices are too high thats fine, I can see an argument there. I am not the kind of buyer that wants to pay up for a car either but thats where the market is on those kinds of cars and for that buying experience.

Cant believe they ran Buck right up the middle on 4th and 1

Thanks Orlando. I saw the first one and inquired about it but got no response. He's had that car on the market for awhile so it may be gone. I'll have to check out the second one since I don't recall seeing it. I hope they're not black or red....

I've got a few on the fire right now; admittedly, one is black. Also looking at an 88 CE coupe as well as a dark green coupe, and another Silver Edition. Right now, I'm liking the CE coupe and will be calling the owner's tech this afternoon to talk about it. I don't want to say any more as to not make certain people aware of who I'm talking to. I'll fill in more when the deal closes one way or another.

I've found one that I like a lot and getting ready to finish things up with the current owner after we get a few things squared away.

Does anyone think an 88 CE coupe with sub 50k miles in primo shape isn't worth $29-30+ right now? Seems like a lot of money but I think it'll hold it's value nicely, providing I don't put 10k miles a year on it. Or should I keep my eyes open and try to find another gem (so to speak) for less?

Looking for a nice blue G50 has been more of a challenge than I thought. No offense to those with red 3.2's but I think I could have had a nice one at just as nice of a price by now but my desired colors limit the cars I'm interested in.

I've looked at other cars but there is always something that makes me move on. I know I'll eventually get hooked and wrench my own but I really want something turnkey for my first one so I don't have a laundry list of stuff to learn how to work with.

While I'm babbling, does anyone know if the CE's were available with the Ferry signature delete? The one I'm looking at doesn't have the sig on the headrests. I actually prefer that since I didn't really like that signature.

As someone that looked for over 2 years for a blue G50 you have my sympathy. For the question on the 88CE. It's not worth that in my opinion. The 88 CE doesn't have anything special that I remember other than color matched wheels and some embroidery on the seats. The 89 25th anniversary is a more "special car" imho and I've seen really nice examples go for less.

Good luck. It's a PITA finding the right car.

Racer, Emerald, Et Al.

Hi, there gentlemen. I too am searching for a G50. I hope you don't mind my joining the bandwagon. I'm in California and also want a specific 911. My list:

Targa only
Black or Dark Blue only
>100k miles

Coupes just don't excite me, Cabs are too problematic and a practical hassle (top down, run into 7-11 for a slurpee and your 911 sits open to the world for some kid to toss trash into or play with your stereo).
Funny thing is most of the cars that fit my description have been on the east coast. I only found one here in CA but not sure I like it's repair history.

Yeah, my list is specific and it's been frustrating trying to get good info from the owners. I hear ya Racer on that one!

Phew! The search continues.....

Update: Here's a coupe that may be of interest. CA car to boot!

Welcome to the fun Yo.

How about these on PCA Mart?

1987 911 Carrera Targa, Venetian Blue/Gray, 66,000 orig miles, exc cond, full history, orig sticker & bill of sale, never winter driven, always garaged, Minimal mods (Muffler, Alpine MP3/CD, Aluminum Pedals). Pics available on request. for $21.5k

1988 911 Carrera Targa – G-50 - Black/Black mint low mileage car, summer driven and garaged in Upstate NY. No commuting use. Only 57,000 miles, 3500 in the last 5 months, excellent mechanicals. Car is original as delivered with beautiful near flawless, original paint and perfect weather seals. Interior is mint except for a worn 4” section of driver’s seat edge beading. Climate control works well - recharged and converted to 134A. Targa top is leak free, in excellent condition. Wheels were upgraded by PO to Carrera Cup 7.5”&9”x17” as used on C2RS Euro cars – I could supply original size Fuchs if required. Nothing is needed – just drive, enjoy, and watch the value rise.
$24,900. Porsche trades considered. More photos at AutoLinc.US - This is a hobby dealership -
Unfortunately, they're also on the East coast. I'll keep my eye open for your car as well.

I'm hoping to close a deal this week on the diamond blue metallic car I've shown on the 911 Technical forum. If that doesn't fly, I'll be looking at a Silver Edition next weekend. I like this one a lot since the current owner had the whale tail very professionally surgically removed.

Thanks, eh, Racer.

I was in communicado with the NY dealer on that 88. Not a great asking price for being so far from me and in this economy. I'll hold out for something closer to me and my want list criteria.

Seems many don't like the whale tail, but I really rather like it. Either way, w/o or w/, if the car is in good shape, I'll go for it.

One car in NY that really, really caught my eye was an '89 Targa with supposedly, 22k original miles for an asking $22k! WOW. White linen interior too. I haven't seen that combo and it looked clean. It sold two days before I called though. BUT, it was repainted at 12k miles. Hmm, why?

Funny how most of the cars that fit my bill are on the east coast. Not sure why. Four on the east, only one on the west. And that one has a questionable repair history, engine and tranny rebuild at only 61k miles, incorrect spark plugs, battery replaced after less than a year AND after dumping over $21k in these repairs, owner sells it less than a year later? Another, "hmm, why?"

OH, AND the repairs were not done a Porsche repair facility, but by a place that does cars and RVs. Another, "hmm, why?"

Yet, it just might be worth a look-see and PPI. This one's a CA car. Dealer is asking $22 with 66k miles currently.

Just finished talking with the seller of one car I was checking out. Too many strange stories and excuses that don't fit. Started sounding like a "used car salesman" too with his manner. No thanks.

Man, private parties are much easier to deal with. I hate the "this car is you" attitude.

Well, I'm going to look at this baby on Saturday in MA. Seller and I have been talking for two weeks and I almost bought it sight unseen but decided to suck it up and make the 16 hour round trip for such an important purchase.

It looks good so far....88 Coupe with 43.5k miles, original paint as gauged by an unsuspecting Richard Sloan. Although I'm kind of curious if he knows how to use a meter since he can't tell 15" wheels from 16's.

Owner and I have agreed upon a price range already so it's down to brass tacks and whether there's something I missed in the pics or I just don't fall in love with it.

Of course, a PPI will still be completed.
