Pricing advice on 73 RSR look hot rod
A little help from the other long time watchers.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=455859 Ebay add just ended with a starting price of $27K an no further reserve. Did not get any bids but more interesting I did not get any e-mails requesting info and attempting to negotiate??? Which I was expecting. Two questions? 1.) Where is the market $ for these cars right now roughly? 2.) Suggestions on the add or presentation? I can take it dont hold back.

Beautiful car and good info. The market for these tribute cars is small, and I think even in a good market, it could take months to sell at a 'reasonable' price. And in this market? If you don't have to sell, hold on to it. But it's going to be a while (several years, IMO) before the market improves. If you have to sell, good luck.

I agree with grudk in both your car and the market for it. As far as your eBay ad, you may wish to relist with a much lower opening and let it go from there, keeping your reserve. I am not an eBay seller but as a "window shopper" I certainly get discouraged when I see a high opening bid on any item.
Just my observations. You have a very nicely built car and I wish you very good luck on your sale.

Thanks guys that is my next move, either do Ebay with a Buy it now/make offer or start the bidding at zero and use a reserve.
I was hoping to use my last Ebay add just to get some conversations started, it worked with a car I sold a few years ago. This time no body contacted me? At least I could get some idea what people might be willing to spend.

Erik,
I also agree, the market for these cars are very limited. You need to be patient today to sell such a car. I also think the values in this market have dropped unless the car is done to very exacting detail. I would also make sure I was marketing the car on all available sites such as PCA, rennlist and Excellence's. I am not crazy about repeated listing on Ebay. I think it sets an expectation of the car's value. Study the way Paul at AutoKennel markets the cars. He has developed a methodology around pricing for Ebay. Good Luck w/ your sale.

Erik, your car is what I want to do, almost. Heres what I see as issues. Please correct me if I am wrong. Did you state the trunk and engine bay not painted the same as the car? For a guy like me I ask why not? You went to all the trouble to pull out the glass so now an orange car has a brown trunk and brown engine compartment.
FG fender gaps not near perfect. You have been very honest in your description of what could be done but has not been done. So, in my feeble mind I like the looks of your car. In reality it is nothing special as far as alot of upgrades. At least you are very honest and that goes a long way.

In my mind it is a lot of work to do the front trunk. The dis assembly and cleaning so it can be painted is very time consuming. I had to draw the line some where. The engine compartment is the same, not hard just time consuming, I did not want to drop the motor for this project. Even if you do all that the underside and interior have not been Painted to match. If you look carefully Porsche did not paint these areas that well either.
I figured if something happened and I kept the car I could do the trunk and engine compartment in stages. Maybe next time the clutch was done or something..... To do a full on rotisserie color change is just a huge undertaking and not really in keeping with my idea of looks good from 10 feet reliable fun driver. A car done with a full rotiserie paint, perfect interior and panel gaps, all new trim, the brakes and suspension is a $60K car maybe. At least that is what I have seen some of them go for. I also think that a motor like this if you are starting with a worn out 3.0 would probably cost $10-12K if you did it yourself, $15-20K to have a good shop build it as this one has. A glass out bare metal repaint would be $10K if you just dropped it off, more to do the back date. I figured this car has most of the "hard" and expensive stuff done for an R group track day car, the other things, brakes, suspension, paint the front and rear compartments could be done over time and with used bits in some areas. I appreciate your thoughts.

Erik just one more thing if I may. Consider what you want for the car and what, lets us say
28K will buy on todays market. Lets use my car for an example. '84 Carrera coupe 75k miles, almost perfect. A 145 mph car that gets 22 mpg. I'm asking $19.5 and not one call. Am I talking apples and oranges? perhaps. My point is 28K buys alot of car in this market. There are wonderful examples of mid 80's Turbos selling in the mid $20's. All of the afore mentioned is strictly IMHO. Mike

You are right, you could get a nice 964, 996 or maybe even a 993? Also an NSX, Ferrari 308, even a Maserati Coupe, E46 M3, Lotus Elise.... Depends on what you are doing but those are a lot of car especially if you are not tracking much (except probably the elise) or at all. I dont know though you can get a lot of neat cars for 10-15K too, and thats where nice SCs and even carreras some times have been for years.... It really depends on what you desire.

I think its just a sign of the times. 3 years ago, its a $30k car. Now, I think you'll be lucky to get over $20k. This is going to be a 2nd or 3rd car for someone, and with other cars dropping in value (like $35k for 996TTs) it makes it that much for your car to compete. If you really want to know what its worth, keep dropping the price and see when you get bites. Best of luck with the sale, it does look like a nice car.

very nice car
but to the average on looker the seats covers are cheesy! when looking at a car first impressions are important. if you want to get top dollar for this car then spend a little more time and a few more bucks to bring it to what you would like to get. the small items wouldn't bother me if was going to buy as i enjoy these projects. but when stating the car is unfinished the smaller your market is. half of your audience are non enthusiast and really don't understand the type of car you have here. they want to buy and drive. for you the car is not done but someone else it will stay as they buy it. first time buyers is why the mid year cars still hold value of sorts. nice cars for less than others, they normally find out about the problems after they buy. i would keep the car and do little things as you advertise for the same money. as its a really nice car and the buyer for it may not be looking today but in a few weeks someone maybe. as we all know its all about timing. cheers ed

The seat covers are bad.....but the seats are Cork Orange..worse?
I was going to install the race seat but I would have to cut the factory seat mount rails off the chassis because I am tall. I thought it might be better to leave all that in case the next owner is short and can just mount directly to them... Good point maybe I should re-word some of that. Like you said its only a project if you want to continue to evolve the suspension, brakes, etc. I guess I need to stop making excuses :-)

Erik , I think you have the base for a nice car here and possibly someone's idea of a track
project potential.. IMHO this market makes this a very narrow segment that may even cast a glance in your cars direction and given your candid honest approach might dissuade some of the lesser hands on type buyer. You spoke at least on the pelican listing of what suspension mods could be addressed..what is the current condition ? Stock 75? Oh and lets not forget the glaring yet somewhat overlooked vintage...it's a 75!!! yes its galvanized right! Well maybe that may have only been lower panels/chassis until 77 whats the going price on a 75 now? Rather rude awakening...but with 3.0 rebuilt great powerplant and excellent performance....for 1980,today everyone is looking to less hands on and electronic gamcrackery ala 3.2 and motronics. Without updated performance suspension and brakes ,it's a nice updated body with later 3.0 liter engine, probably sub 20k particularly today. ten..uh fifteen years back I had a very nice 77 calif car turbo bodied ,3.2 late eng/trans and turbo brakes recently completely done over paint and body that I had to say I was happy to get 18,500 and that was top dollar. Some of our valuations in terms of money invested may need adjustment for the amount of enjoyment we received....some may never be recouped..My .02 Bert

I'm not sure basing it on a 75 is a negative. In CA it's a BIG positive. NO SMOG

If you are not a sophisticated 911 buyer and look at the books they all say stay away from the middies so that may be an issue. I just got an e-mail asking if it was the original motor....I think his level of understanding about the cars is so far down I did not know where to begin...maybe thats a perfect buyer? Some one who likes the color and just wants a Porsche, leave the rest to the mechanic.
