John, which car number is the Talbot Yellow car? Is the black rear fender protection an option on Carreras?
|
Thanks for the post John.
The only exterior change I made was to go back to the European look and go to the lack of U.S.A. side markers in the front bumper I had to put on to meet DOT certification back in 1983. Now, as I said I bought this car in Germany back in 83, but have not been it's caretaker since. The PO didn't like the rear tail, so he put a standard decklid on the car. Thankfully, he had the original rear tail in his garage stored. When I painted the car, I did both rear lids so there would be a choice of which way to go. Either way you would have a perfect paint match as they were done side by side. Also, I didn't put the "turbo" style rear gravel guards on the rear quarters. |
The talbot yellow car is my #028. After looking at John's picture I thought of another change. The 7X8 X15 wheels had a polished finish. I sent the wheels to Weidman and his research showed the the proper finish was rough anodized dish, and clear anodized outer lip. Center completly black. I'm sure this will spark debate, but they arrived yesterday and look incredible. I did the same finish on my Carrera 3.0 and loved it.

By 75, that black/ anodized finish was correct for US Carreras and Turbo's I've seen. ROW cars are kind of wild cards on that kind of stuff but at no point would polished have been correct. |

Concerning door panel , knob style , look actuators.
I don't know about the last examples of 1976 MY 911's in the real world . But in the current PET , the lock actuator (knob) bezel (i would call it cup , as that's what it is shaped liked) that goes in the door panel. Is noted as "1977 - " Which means 1977 - on . It's part No. 911.531.692.00 ("covering" in english / "abdeckschale" in German). |
Hello ,
Can we get that whaletail thread going , or start a new one ?. I have some things i'd like to verify . And some things i'd like to figure out. I will go post a question on the one thats buried in earlier pages of this thread (i think it was started by peon 77). |
Last night I took the time to read the entire thread. I have a little more to contribute.
Back on Post #18 by GWhite, 76 Carrera 2.7 # 83 was mentioned. This car was owned by a doctor in N.Carolina since the 80's. He had it in the Porsche Club magazine Panorama for literally 6 to 8 years. I watched it with interest as he wanted 45K for the car. I think this was from the late 90's to about 2004. At the time most readers of Pano had no idea what this car was. It never sold through Pano. Around 2004 I was in N.C. and made a appointment to look at the car. I was cash poor at the time and didn't buy it. The shame is that several months later he contacted me a said he was going to sell it to the highest bidder for all those who had contacted him over the years. I think it went in the low 30's ! He had documents from a local know Porsche shop stating the drive train was rebuild. The bottom line for the work was 12k. Also, he let me photo copy a letter from 1994 he wrote to the factory. His responce was like the letter on post #135 by peon. Same 2 signatures. In the letter Olaf Lang said about 60% of the cars were built with sunroofs. He also stated that the build date was June 1976. That is the month that all these 76 2.7's that I have ever seen were built. Keep in mind that the 76 Carrera 3.0 production started in the fall of 1975. So it's safe to say that these car were built when the MY 76 3.0 was about finished. From a mechanical standpoint, another interesting deal is that all these 2.7 cars have a cable driven mechanical speedo. All MY 76 cars had electric speedo's starting in the fall of 1975. And yes, all the cars I've seen have the Permatune CD box. |
Rick ,
Is this the N.C Doctor's car ? , this car i'm reposting a photo of below. No 9083 ? , That's what I have it logged as - from Gwhites comment (post #18 of this thread / 1st page) : "Hi, The ad on Pistonheads for this white one states that it is 660 9083 with Engine No 666 8113". If so , it's the car that started this thread in the first place , but maybe not ?........as if so , you probably would have mentioned it ? If it is not , what number IS this white sunroof example - anyone ? : http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1296067657.jpg PS - of the 13 cars I have in my notes , seeing photos of 11 of them , only 3 have been sunroof optioned . This white one (whatever No. it is) , the Freisinger restored car (9041) , and the gold South African car (9107). |
The car was white, but can't remember if it had the sunroof. I see this one has the right side mirror. It was several years ago....just can't remember.

Rick,
I must say your car looks great in Talbot Yellow and appreciate all the insight you have been able to provide from your experience with the '76 C2.7. I am pleased that in return I have been able to provide the COA information for you and btw it didn't cost me any Dollars (or pounds). If you have your engine and/or transmission numbers I can also get them confirmed as the original matching items if this is the case unless you have already done this. Ratbox, The photo you posted above is one from the advert on Pistonheads for #83 so I definitely think it is that one. Sounds like the Doctor from N.C. sold it to Australia. In fact a number of UK Carrera 2.7's have been exported to Australia, think it is down to both driving on the right and that the C2.7 is the choice for historic racing over there. I have also only seen the three 1976 cars that you list with the sunroof option. Guy |
Thx guys ,
There was another yellow example here in the U.S. as of the very late 80's (maybe it was the very beginning of the 90's ?) . It was advertised in Autoweek for awhile out of N.Y. or N.J possibly , if my memory is good in that regard. All I remember is it was yellow , and had a wing. So it's another yellow coupe . Unless it was your No. 28 - Rick ? I do also remember that even back then , the advertiser wanted 70k . Which was a bit strong for the times . Only considering that most enthusiests then , did not even know they existed. I have a copy buried somewhere of one of the edition's with the ad , which listed the chassis. I have not been able to locate it . I looked for it a few months ago. |
Yes, it was my #9028. It was in Autoweek, and the Dupont Registry. I'll get the engine and trans # tonight when I get home.
I was contacted by a guy from Australia last year and really wanted the car. It was a car that fit into sometype of racing series. |
Ratbox
I was referencing 660 9041 interior. I was curious about the cloth inserts being very similar to the pattern on my 660 9120. Sorry should have put the post #170. Rick Cabell I too remember seeing the N.C. car advert in Pano. I actually call the doctor back then just to say hi and let him know there were at least 2 in the US. Does your tweed look like the plaid in post # 65 or post #63 & #170? |
It is like post # 81 without door panel trim.
Or just like post # 68 |
Paging GWhite ,
I don't know if you saw this . If not , I thought it might interest you . On Ebay -ended last week : Item Location: Sun Valley, CA, United States Ended: Jan 26, 201112:18:24 PST 140502971386 (you can look at all the photos by doing an ended aution search - I don't know how to create a link). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1296867698.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1296867808.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1296867936.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1296869946.jpg As maybe you might guess , it interests me because I see a second grill tail. Can you check the records , and see if this car was delivered with M473 ??? If so , I will try to contact to check for originality of tail to car. Although from an engine bay photo , I see no passenger side shock or associated pieces . But we have not determined , for certain , when that part of the package became part of M473 for non-930 applications - have we ? Where the 2nd , passenger side shock was on 930's starting straight away in 1975 MY ? I know it was used on 930's in 1976 MY , as of Nov. 1975 (680 0115) |
Hi RatBox,
Unfortunately the original spec for that car does not show M473 as an option. In any case I'm not sure that it is too original as it has the pinstripe seats that came in the 1977 model year. I have reviewed the photographs of all the Carrera 3's I have and all 1976 cars I know with factory option M 473 have a single grill fibreglass tail with the rubber surround. These also have the small rubber inserts in the channel that you previously pointed out. The 1977 models have the all rubber tail mounted on the metal lid, a second gas strut on the right hand side and no rubber inserts in the channels. As Rick Cabell said earlier in the thread I think the second grill tails came about as that's what was available. The '76 Carrera # 50 in this thread is the only one I've seen with a second grill and the trunking. The PET catalogue for 1974 to '77 911's shows two part numbers for a fibreglass whale tail (911 512 010 07 & 930 512 010 01) but no part numbers are listed for the grill or trunking (items 29 to 32 shown in diagram but not listed in part numbers). These parts are however listed in the 930 catalogue. Guy |
Thx for looking that car up GWhite. I am always keeping my eye open for related info.
Yes I noticed also, that postion numbers 29-32 . Are not listed in text form where they would be in the 1974 - 77 911 PET catalog - if applicable. Yet as far as I know ? I believe some 1977 MY Carrera 3.0's were fitted with these pieces . And the applicable 2nd grill tail. Similarly strange , and along these same lines . Is the fact that , in the 1974-77 911 PET , all three main tail piece versions ("spoilerdeckel") are listed. Which means they are applicable. Obviously this does not just mean that you could fit them. As if that was the case , position number 29-32 pieces would be listed also. Further , the two 'heckspoiler' pieces , with 930 based part numbers have the same numbers . One I believe is a mis-print , and should either be 930.512.010.00 .... or another number . I would think each would have it's own unique part number. Sometime , I am going to dig up as many , differant date printed , 1975 - 77 original parts catalogs as I can get find (I mean actually printed during the time frame of 1975-78). Or microfiche. And see exactly what they show. I think there are some mistakes in the transcription of the PET's. I believe the tails that are present , in current times , with 660 9050 & 660 9120 , were not originally fitted to those cars . As they do not have the correct heatshields (abschirmblechs) accompanying them. Both have the 911 application A/C heatshields (911.512.010.01) . Which is what was superceded after the original non-A/C piece was NLA. In 1976 MY , if fitted with M473. A 911 Carrera (or 930) , would have the correct applicable heatshield , as the factory still had all three : (I got the correct non- A/C 911 part number piece from old microfiche , actually someone did for me) Non 2nd grill , Non A/C optioned - 911.512.165.00 Non 2nd grill , A/C optioned - 911.512.165.01 2nd grill - 930.512.165.00 Whether or not the pieces 29-32 on the diagram would have been included with a 2nd grill tail if one was fitted by the factory on a Non Turbo Carrera. If it was a Non A/C optioned car . It would come with either the 930 heatshield , if the Air funnel was fitted . Or 911.512.165.00 if not . |
GWhite's post just tickled my memory. My 77 3.0 Carrera that I sold in July came with a rear spoiler from the factory. Single grill. It also had the rubber snubbers in the channels. These snubbers were held in place by a nipple on the back side that went into hole about 8mm in diameter. In other words the holes for the snubbers were drilled before the car was painted. So, would that mean that if there were no holes in the channels for the snubbers, that the car did not come out of the factory with a rear spoiler?

Sounds logical to me Rick.
