Why are 996 and 997 prices so high right now?
I've been watching 996 and 997 prices for the last month or so looking to buy. But most of the asking prices are thousands more than the Kelly Blue Book or Excellence magazine prices.
It almost seems like folks are taking end of year bonuses and buying sports cars pushing the prices up.

they probably aren't actually getting the asking prices. look at the cars for sale, some of the prices being asked there are crazy high (and others are reasonable). look on craigslist, you are more likely to see real word prices.

I also imagine that all the "need to sell" owners of say, 3 years ago when the markets tanked, are out of their cars.. folks that are selling now are only doing so if the money makes sense. You also don't mention where you are looking for cars. In general it seems most 996's I've seen for sale are more than they would have been last year.
It also seems to me by the 10-12-15 year age (of which 996s are entering), Porsches tend to stop depreciating greatly. Shifts in price are smaller and really nice examples get a bit harder to find.

It's the late model used car market. With a car like that, my initial offer would be 20% less than asking and I would buy at 10-15% off asking in most instances. Try factoring that math into your numbers and see if the prices you are seeing local to you seem more in line with published reports.

Then yopu have some sellers that have the car listed for about two years and will not budge on the asking price.
We have made a final reduction to $24,900 - I have over $34k dollars invested. Not a perfect garage queen - but a ton of late model Porsche for the money! Numerous detailed pictures available to a serious buyer at $24,900 - if you're thinking less - let's not waste each other's time!

from looking at the market the for the past year..
997 S with sport chrono holds the best value. all the crazy upgrades like leather sun visors do not seem to make any difference. I'm still trying to figure if I want to go with the new GTS or a 2 year old 997 |

I got $21.5k for a very clean, no RMS issue late build '99. 75k miles, no issues, dealer serviced, supple leather, RoWM030, and a couple of other options
