dellusional prices
Checked out an farm auction for a 73 911s with 60K. Gumb Auction & Realty, Inc.
Car has horrible respray, appears to be rusted pretty bad on the rear facia and lower rockers, No idea of the engine other than it runs. Aftermarket radio else interior fair for the age. Was going to put in a standing bid but they hit me with the opening bit price. $50,000 dollar opening bit. You heard it I had to ask twice just make sure. I know the older cars are going up but come on now someone needs to have a reality check in the BF nebraska. Heck I thought I would be pushing it making an unknown $5000 bid.

Okay, so it's not mint. It is pretty much all there, with some desireable options. The seats are worth $5k by themselves. Their number is closer than yours. A lot closer..

Yep...I bet someone will pay the $50k if not more...the market for a '73 S is nuts right now. Looks like a pretty clean car to me. Did you see the car in person? Just wondering about the rust...I can't see any serious rust in the pictures.

Yeah, what do you expect, it's an S. But don't know if the buyer will be happy with his investment.
The car will require a lot more $$$... To be nice again... Just my 0.02$ |

These cars are trending triple digits. The color is a premium color plus a 60,000 mile original car, IMO, will bring a high number. This is easily a $75,000 to $80,000 car at a farm auction. Would love to see the estimate at RM.

Blow up the side shot. The rocker looks to be toast. Still think it is a rediculous price for an unkown car. Engine does have pressure tensioners but no way to know what else. Other issue is the respray. Car was yellow perhaps just a personal color choice.

73s
Last year of the early cars besides the RS and the 67s would say the next most desirable car.
IMHO If I was close I would be at the auction. |

It's going to take a lot of bucks to repaint that car to match the original color. Probably $7K plus. Assume because the repaint is poor quality that a lot of the trim is scratched or screwed up. That's pricey to fix. Rust repair unknown, but a show quality chassis repair ain't cheap. Leave the interior... then who knows what it needs to get it running. At $50K, a winning bidder is going to be under water.

I recently received an estimate for a windows out, really high quality repaint for $12,000 which includes little if any body work (rust). SoCal shop. Quality ain't cheap.

I'm curious, did you see the paint tag on this car? Is so what was the number? I see no signs of yellow paint, even the trunk seems to have the light over spray of the gold color. The latch panels show fairly bright metallic gold, but as noted, the paint on the body is quite faded. Thanks.

Looks geminiblau metallic from here but it’s very hard to tell. Seeing how every bit of the engine compartment is gold metallic, I’d expect it to be the original color. |

Tech,
I don't agree. These cars are beginning to hit their stride as far as appreciation whether we believe it or not. The car looks very clean to me, with most importantly, all the required 1973 appropriate parts. I would budget $20,000 for exterior refurbishing (Paint, bodywork and bright work) $10,000 for interior reupholstering and $20,000 for mechanical refreshening. This would leave me with a #1 car for $100,000. I do believe a professional like California Porsche Restoration, TLG/Esposito or TRE would be able to do it cheaper than me. With that being said this car doesn't look like it needs that much work but then again I am veiwing through the internet. I will say the purchaser is starting with a much better foundation than I started with when I restored my 69S.

Restored the way that Pastaboy describes that car could be sold into Europe for $125-150k. I do agree that the buyers are delusional, but delusional or not they are willing to pay. Long nose S's in primo condition will be $250k cars withing 3-5 years. Just look at where 356s were 5 years ago. Longnoses are right behind them...

$50k doesn't seem out of line to me if the car is a mostly rust-free driver. Right now, a #1 condition matching numbers 72 or 73 S coupe will bring $125k+ It's impossible to tell what this car needs from the few poor photos though. Could be an easy fix, could be a money pit. A lot depends on how much "free" rust is included and the condition of the engine. If anyone has seen the car in person or knows anything about her history, I would like to know more.

Porsche Marketplace
I agree with you on prices going up on the anything S with early cars. Can someone answer the question regarding the MFI? With a serial number at 1300 wouldn't that make it a late production car? Was MFI used on cars that late?
Oh...and its worth $50k easy.

Dave, all the 73S's and E's were MFI for the whole year. The 73T got the changeover to CIS in mid year. e

A 73 S unwelded, restored not perfectly repainted, is offered for around 80K Euro, which will be around 105$, maybe the prices are in that area once the car is finished. 1973S 2.4 for Sale in Germany... (No, haven't seen the car in person, nor I have any links to the dealer)
Lately I saw a report on bloomberg where an analyst sees the Dollar gaining value towards the Euro until end of the year which will have an impact more or less. Quote:

Paint is not cheap, everyone thinks they have some type of grasp on what it takes to paint a early Porsche but in reality most do not. I do quality paint starting around $15k without rust repair. Its a ton of work and cheap dumb imported laborers have no clue how to fit and paint one of these cars. You get what you pay for, it is best to find a very competent intelligent restorer and then your car will achieve these high 6 figure values.
If these cars would achieve $250k in a couple years then I am moving to the beach in an expensive community. To compare a market buy..... I picked up a 73 911S in Indiana late last year with 62,000 original mile no rust anywhere for $35,000, needing restoration but complete, leather seats however and not sports seats. I will gladly sell it for $250k in perfect concours show winning condition. Give me a call, even in 3-5 years when you are searching old threads. I wonder what my Black/Black 73 911E with 16,000 original miles is worth?
