930 vs. 911
Question for those that have driven 911s and 930s of roughly the same year:
Prior to boost kicking in, does a 930 drive much like a 911 of the same vintage (e.g., 1987 3.2 vs. 3.3) with respect to torque/hp curve? I am wondering if you give up any low rev driveability with the 930 vs. the 911. Of course, many engines vary, so I am asking for general impressions with respect to stock setups. My impression has been that, with some of the race inspired models, you may be giving up some low end driveability (e.g., less torque at low revs) as a tradeoff for the top end power. I seem to remember reading that somewhere about the 997 GT3 vs 3.6 or 3.8. But I could be wrong about that. Any thoughts? |

They are two different cars, the 930 feels much heavier, engines are similar but without boost hard to say because of the 4 vs 5 speed trannies.

Thanks for the comments and links.
I'm not asking about how one's entire package relates to the other, as I understand they are pretty different animals. I guess what I am really wondering is, during the 930's period of Turbo lag in lower revs, is it just like driving a normal 911 in that rev range or is it something worse? So, putting aside differences in clutch and suspension, etc., around town where you keep it below 4000 RPM most of the time, from a pure torque/hp perspective, does a 911 actually provide better performance than a 930? I ask because that is my impression of many of Porsche's race inspired models as compared to the "plain Janes" of the same era. For example, in 2007, the 911 Carrera/S had max torque of 273/295, respectively, and max hp of 325/355, while a GT3 had max torque of 300 and max hp of 415. But at 3000 rpm, where you are a heck of a lot more around town than 6000 RPM, the 911's torque numbers are 207/236 while the GT3 is only about 150. Similarly, HP for the Carrera at 3000 RPM is about 150/235 while the GT3 is only 136. Just something I have been wondering and thought I may be able to find some people here with direct experience. Many thanks for entertaining my questions! |

911 vs 930
Everyone has provided great points! I test drove several 87-88 911's. They were nice but just didn't satisfy me. I kept comparing them to my 95 M3 5-spd at the time. Perhaps, a bad comparison but the shifting, handing and balance offset any yearning to acquire them. Then I test drove the Beast. Yes, she was initially ho-hum(lag)....but when boost kicked in all sane thoughts went out the window. So, I added the 930 into the family (3/11).
Imho, a 911 na from 0-45mph feels more nimbler than a 930 but after that there is no comparison (stock vs stock). Happy Motoring!

I've had a 85 RoW cab, 80 SC, 79 930 and currently have a modded 86 930.
For around town driving, the SC felt the torquiest and most nimble, followed by the 85 RoW. The SC was stock, but had a gutted cat and euro fuel head. The RoW was stock with the 231hp motor. For daily driving, I'd take the SC, but the 85 cab had superior fuel mileage (12 vs 19). The 79 turbo was essentially stock and didn't have much oomph until you got on boost. The 86 is just a beast that pulls from 2.2k-7k, but drives heavy because it is.

My '78 930 is modified and I've compared it to 3.2 NA Carreras. 930 is lighter, faster and more torque at all RPMs but this is only because I have a strenghtened 915 g'box, all unnecessary (and heavy) pieces deleted and 3.4 engine with 7.5 compression, ball bearing turbo, big intercooler etc etc.
Stock 930 is by far not as satisfying at low revs/city driving. I think that old 930 has so huge potential for easy and extremely efficient modifications that driving it stock nowadays misses the point. After all it does not have any significant collectibility potential so far and I do not see it in the nearest or mid term future. Last edited by Janusz1; 01-17-2013 at 11:16 PM.. |
