1971 911T - very original. Burgundy... or...?
Just about at final primer stage on this '71 911T. Car runs and drives very well.
I have been planning to repaint in original Burgundy Red and sell for $29,000. However, today, I had a visitor come by with a '70 S coupe that was repainted Tangerine from Burgundy Red, and it made me think: if I had a buyer lined up for the car, and that buyer had the choice of Burgundy Red, or for $1,000 more, any color at all (I'd personally go to Aubergine or Tangerine or Jade or Conda), wouldn't now be the perfect time to mention it to all the Pelicanheads (at least the ones in this section). So, have at it. I'm generally not a fan of color change, but recently took a Sepia Brown car to Beige Gray and have no regrets. The car before painting: ![]() Possible other colors: Aubergine ![]() Tangerine ![]() Jade

I prefer Tangerine or Signal Orange.
Aubergine is also very nice. |

I'm not much a fan of the greens. Forest Green, maybe. Yellows, oranges and purples.
I do like Ossi, Gulf and Mexico in the blue category. But Signal and Tangerine are still my most favorite. |

Without a firm buyer for other color, original. It is 'different enough'.

Aubergine
If the car will concour, original color. If it will not concour, change the color. In Florida, we couldn't give away an Aubergine in 1971. Today, I think it's classic 911! And....you won't see it every other day. Too many green, orange & yellow running around. The only Aubergine I can think of in SoCal is Roger Grego's '73.
Love to see it when you're finished as I'm just up the road from you. Good luck! |

Burgandy is a beautiful color. Maybe not as nice as some of the other colors you mentioned, but def nice enough to keep original.

Unless someone steps up and puts a deposit on the car repaint it burgundy. Great color.
If I were changing the color definitely signal orange. |

That's kinda where I'm at. The orange 2.2 S that I saw yesterday is easily $100K+ and value is not much affected by the color change. But I'm not going to pre-emptively pick a color.

Colors
I really like burgundy and it's kind of a "right" period, classic color, don't see a lot running around down here. Color's so subjective if painting on spec would do in burgundy or most popular color to attract widest group. I like your strategy of getting word out now and maybe buyer can get whatever color they want.

I mean burgundy is the safe color to go with - the no hassle, no stories, no worries, security color to go with. Really I don't know what other people are thinking but that green Jade is right on, I really like it. There are myriad period colors more popular than burgundy, so I would pick the most popular period color (or unusual or rare) and do it up. I say forget the burgundy, but then again you can't stave off security...especially in the classic car business where everyone has an opinion and that opinion is always right.
I always have a conundrum in painting, as repainting in the 'original' color doesn't make it original, and the original color realistically has not been 'original' since it was painted in the paint shop that very day. So either way, the cars been repainted. Sure it looks original, in the 'original' color, but it's not original. Like I said I would go with some cool period color that is rare or unusual. Jade. Right on, CountD, this is an "investment" car a friend and I picked up, and so the idea is to turn $XX into $YY and so I'm airing the question here. The time window is perfect for someone to swoop in and make a dream driver out of what is basically a very original car. It is currently prepped to repaint in Burgundy Red. Decision time is 5 days out.

I wonder if -- in ten years -- tangerine and signal orange will be the "guards red" of long hoods?
I can see the ads and hear the commentary: originally burgundy, repainted in "resale orange".... Bought on "spec" as an investment, I expect it is wisest to go with your well informed sense of the market: orange. But how original is the rest of the car? If it is sufficiently intact, you might be better served to keep the paint the original color -- possibly keeping the interest of that segment of the market that values originality. If it is already significantly modified, go with the flash color.

That's my conundrum. It is 100% original. That's the key reason I'm tending to Burgundy Red.
And I think your comment about 'guards red'/'resale orange' is spot on.

It has been pointed out to me that I overlooked a very nice alternative color:
Slate Gray

You know I was going to say that the McQueen S LeMans Slate Grey would be the money making color in the first post I made - no joke. Go with Slate Grey - it sure beats that Burgundy, as the Burgundy has and never will do it for me. Paint it slate and don't look back. (Can't you tell I don't want it Burgundy? Or someone just buy it and paint it SG already or maybe that Jade.)
