'86 PTS value
The white car I was looking at fell thru and I happened to come across another interesting '86 (info below). Any idea what something like this should sell for? Are PTS cars worth more? 50k miles is nice but at the same time it worries me when a car isn't driven. Any help or direction would be appreciated. Thanks guys!
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Rare Factory Paint to Sample 53,000 Original Miles Exterior: Metallic Paint-to-Sample Coral Orange Metallic Interior: Black This particular 911 currently has a well maintained 53,000 miles with a clean and clear history. The five speed transmission is smooth and great to drive. This 911 has excellent handling and classic Porsche styling. I would think if it passes a PPI, the low miles would be a big plus.
Having the records is a plus too. I don't know if PTS makes it anymore special either (or what value the exclusivity of the color choice would add), but again, I would think that as long as you love the color, it sounds really good overall. I think that the seller would base the asking price more on the car's condition and lo mileage and less on the color (which might appeal to fewer buyers). Try comparing the price to other cars of similar mileage and condition, and ignore the color to determine if it they're asking a fair value. This is just my opinion. I would love to see it.

I found it. That car is nice looking. Very stinkin' clean. Big addition to simple beauty with no tail.
They are axin' top dollar which is expected. Selling price though, high 20's. Perhaps very high 20's as emotion will enter into this sale. Whether you or someone else. Downside is that second generation part needs are going to present themselves. The usual fare. Paint to sample is one person's view of beauty. It's a great color but I don't think it adds or detracts from value. Key is if the paint is factory and in awesome shape, you don't have to repaint it and you have factory paint. Repaint $$ is huge. More than an engine rebuild. It's no more than a loaded Camry and you know how sexy that car is. Not. Edit: Not posting link to car. OP can if he wishes

I'm with Bob. Nice car. The value is in the condition and low miles. Color may help sell, but no more than any not-common color. I also doubt that PTS adds additional value, but doesn't detract either.

It looks like a nice car but doesn't look exceptional. I personally like the color. I think it's strong at asking price, I think the money is $27k if its original paint, history verifies mileage (too me it looks like a 80-110k mile car based on the interior but photos aren't real life so who knows) and PPI doesn't turn up anything major.

I don't think the option "paint to sample" has any value, apart from what value is added or subtracted by the color of the car. That's to say, if most people like the color better than the other colors Porsche offered in 1986, then it might add a little value. The color can also hurt the value, if it is one that doesn't appeal to many buyers.
I've looked at the ad and I don't think the car is in exceptional condition. It's not even well detailed for sale. I think the seller is asking way too much for what he's presenting. Had the car been kept in better shape while he owned it, that would be another thing. I wouldn't be worried about the low mileage. JR |

I mean, I could be seen in this car, but on closer inspection of some of the interior bits, they could have dressed it up a bit more like JR says. Just a little hide food or something. This is not a $20k Carrera though. Even w/o the G50 premium, I think it will fetch $25. $27 if they got time.

Faded, stained wheels. Brake dust on the back sides of the wheels that has been there forever. Wear to the driver's seat. Scratches and scuffs in the leather. Delaminated backing for the carpet in the rear right jump seat. Faded plastic on the interior that would take 5 minutes to fix. Not my favorite oil filter. Trunk carpet not installed correctly. Nicks in the paint on the drivers side lock post from the seat belt tang hitting the car when he took the belts off.
Etc. I think if a seller can't be bothered to detail a car for sale, I'll wager that he didn't treat it much better when he drove it. As an example, here are a couple of photos of a 60k mile '86 targa that I wholesaled for $18k a couple of years ago. Note that it is a much more heavily optioned car. JR ![]() ![]() |

Nobody could have predicted that result!
The problem is that the market seems to be in flux. The spread between what Pelicans are willing to pay and what the asking prices seems to be is growing daily. There is going to be a correction somewhere, soon. |

What do you think that would sell for in the retail market today?

I really have no idea, since I'm not following the market. Perhaps $25k?

I just found it too. It's a clean looking car, a bit of wear on the seats, and I doubt that dealer is budging off of anywhere short of $29,000 for it. If it were private party, you probably could get closer to the mid-20s for it.

That is a $30,000 car +/- $500. Could use a good detailing but the lack of elbow grease is the buyers gain!
The color is a plus to the equation. If it was a G50 it would be almost a $40,000 car. Keep in mind the appreciation curve of the longhoods.....
