In San Fran? I'd get it off the street. My friend had two vintage cars (american muscle) stolen off the street in SF. He also caught thieves in the act of trying to jack his GT3 from a private garage.

Not so sure. Because the car looks rough, people think they can pick it up for $1500. Once you make it nice there will be far fewer dreamers who think they can get it for a song.

Cheers

You start with "Not so sure" the go on and support my comment?

pretty sure you were suggesting I'll continue to get attention after the resto while he was saying there'll be less folks trying to sneak up on a bargain.

I was not clear, I should have said, "If you do not restore that car and make it a driver and drive it expect much more of this".
I have a SWB driver and it is common to have people yell " how much" at me while I drive it besides the notes. Never happens in the restored cars.

I've never once gotten a note on my pristine '86 3.2 Carrera. Get them all the time on my driving project '67 912. I think there's some truth to what you are saying here.

Sure, the longnose is going to get more attention in general, but it's still just a 912. And the Carrera is a gorgeous car in a special order color with a bunch of extra options on it. But never once a note or a "how much" out the window.

The people leaving notes are looking for the next "barn find" as if they might find it just sitting on the street. Wishful dreaming that the owner doesn't know what the car is worth.

For all u guys that are crying about never getting a 'wtb' note on ur cars, pm me your address and ill mail u one. If u live around ga or Alabama, ill personally deliver those myself. Lol.

Maybe leave a small message on the dash stating "only notes with cash offers will be retained". That should take care of 90% of "call me".

not a bad idea. was actually thinking of making a little decal that said NOT FOR SALE to lower folks' expectations. but if I saw that on a car I'd think they were total dickheads.

also, got another one today. merf.

Groovy. How do you pronounce that? "Shady?"

Matt Monson 12-18-2013 06:34 PM

That's weird. I used to have a friend at Young's. Once traded him some gearbox parts for about 10 cases of Napa Valley wines.

Shadib1 12-18-2013 08:17 PM

No dickheads here , maybe take it as a compliment we are all part of a community and I'm sure if you saw a car you know a friend or yourself wanted you would do same

ha apologies if that wasn't clear, I was saying if I stuck a NOT FOR SALE decal on the car I'd feel like a dickhead.

also, howdy, nice to meet ya. nice to see this one was a fellow p-car enthusiast.

pavulon 12-19-2013 04:23 AM

^^^how cool is this!!!^^^ :) :)

After thinking about it, if the car isn't for sale at any reasonable price, maybe the small communication inside should indicate the same. Maybe some small, self-deprecating, humorous note on the driver's seat...something doesn't scream "Hey, I'm an azzhat with a great car...please run your sharpest key from one end of this thing to the other". Not that patina'd cars shout "key me" but I'm sure you get the idea.

Joshy Robots 02-24-2014 05:33 PM

still got it

p-car was in the shop for two months. first morning back on the street and I find this:

hubba hubba

techweenie 02-24-2014 05:39 PM

That is the dirtiest 911 I've ever seen outside of a Paris-Dakar rally.

Joshy Robots 02-24-2014 05:42 PM

oh that? that's just my perma-dirt. custom urban camo paint, it's about as clean as it gets.

My hero. I'm always getting remarks on my dirty Porsches. Now I can say I'm conserving water.

I used to drive a 1955 Chevy Nomad and people would always throw offers at me and I got complacent. And then when I got a real job and needed a 'young executive type car,' I couldn't find anyone to buy the Nomad.

My advice is: consider any serious offer. You may want to keep it forever today, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Jrboulder 02-24-2014 05:55 PM

Maybe a "Considering offers above 100k" sticker would scare off the dreamers.

I've wrestled with entertaining offers on my car but I can't get past knowing that it's unlikely I'll ever come across another '89 in such a unique color combination in the condition mine is in at a price I would be willing to pay. I think I got lucky when I bought it with respect to timing of the 911 market and doubt I could justify spending what a car like mine is going for today.

You . . . You . . . Lucky buzzard! As much a enjoy my red targa (no regrets whatsoever) I really would love to have a blue coupe to keep it company! What sort of an offer might you be willing to entertain? 😉
