Dunno.
I am thinking the SCs look too much like the 3.2 Carreras and the Carreras have too many advantages in the eyes of most for that to happen: G50 in the later cars, larger engines, better fuel injection, the chain tensioner thing, the head stud thing, etc, etc.

You may be right, time will tell. Obviously there was no shortage of either model so it won't be rarity that pushes values. I just think that the SC is special because it represents a leap forward in reliability, drivability, comfort and performance over the earlier cars. At the same time they retain a certain rawness that is hard to define. Are the Carreras better in the areas I mention? Arguably so, but I don't think that will be the determining factor for collectibility. I consider the Carrera to be the beginning of the ultimate refinement of the 911 that continues today. That's not a bad thing at all. It's just that some of that "vintageness" some of us crave has been washed away in the process.

Generally speaking 356's values are not based on weather they are a Super, Normal etc. just is it a 356, then they are broken down by time frame , A, pre-A etc.
I believe the same thing will happen with the 911 (65-89) the huge price difference between an S and a T in the long hoods will decrease and the difference between an SC and a Carrera will decrease and originality and condition will be the big value indicators. Even the "mid year" 911's (74-77) are losing their bad stigma every year that goes by. There is less and less baggage from the past by the newer people buying these cars and they seem to see "classic Porsche" and condition more than any thing. |

Agreed .... also by this time in their lice cycle the failures of the engineering in the mid year cars have typically been addressed. There is nothing wrong with them that hasn't been a well known issue and a solution been available for. The middies wity issues addressed haveoved up in price nicely and are very nice cars. The lines imo are a lot cleaner.
What about cars with easily reversible mods? Different exhausts non factory fuchs added ducks or slightly revised interiors from factory. Do you deduct much if all the original parts come with the car? Do you pay more if all the original parts come wity the car? Do you deduct much if the original parts are smple to find?

I predict the first year 3.2 model will accelerate the most in price over the next decade. Why you ask?
Because any 3.2 with a build date in 1983 is eligible to a host of historic tours and races in Europe with more classes being created all the time for pre 84 cars. Because the first year 3.2 has a lot of carry over from an SC that was lost in 1985. |
