Do I have a 65' 911?
Hi all,
I'm hoping to get some advice from the collective. I've been offered a 1966 911 (I think). I've been dreaming of a long hood car for years but always seem priced out of the market. This one popped up at the right price so I bought it sight unseen. Some time in the early 90's someone did the "Miami vice" wide body steel kit and whale tail, new fuel injected motor and all new 80's interior. I guess this is really a 2-3 question post. 1. What exactly do I have. 2. Is it worth trying to take it back to stock 3. Is it better to cut my losses and sell as is to someone with more skills to build. As is sits it really is just another wide body hot rod that has been sitting outside for 12 years. The only value to me is bringing it back to stock. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks K. Last edited by kpick; 03-26-2014 at 12:43 PM.. |

Definitely smells like a '65 to me, although far, far from original. It will take a lot of work and $$ to make it right, but definitely worth it.

Your car is a '65. I believe #301368 is owned by someone on Early 911S Registry. The engine number of that car is 901484. if your engine number is in that range, you likely have a "matching numbers" 1965 911. That is a valuable thing to have.
The road back to stock will be long, difficult and expensive. Financially, it will probably be worth it if you have the patience.

Definitely not numbers matching as he stated it has a late model fuel injected motor... From what the OP stated pretty much the only thing 1965 about that car is the VIN, so it's gonna cost a boatload to put it back to original...

I've seen some pretty weird stuff on older 911s, from retrofitted fuel injection to Holley carbs sitting on a plenum connected to CIS runners. Not much surprises me anymore.

all wrong. Its an 85 930. The OP just gave you guys a vin #from a 1965 911 so that y'all can drool.... :-) No other pictures except for the one posted and from the picture there are no indication it is 1965 911. The yellow truck in the background loosk more original than the Porsche.

Well a 930 has a certain value... To some. ;-)
I've seen late cars with early VIN plates & stampings. Interested in "the rest of the story" |

...OR since you are new to 911s, clean it really well, get what you got running and enjoy it. Honestly I have seen body kits that are 10X worse than the one you have. I am not a fan of the fins/louvers as they are but they blend into the look of the car. That body kit isn't too drastic to the point that it's embarrassing.
My one piece of advice before you even start cleaning or getting the motor ready it to get some sort of TITLE for it. Arizona can be a mess for this (or at least it used to). You might have to put quite a large sum up for a bond for it (I have been down this route in AZ). Try to get the title cleaned before the interior... |

It's a mix of parts now that I see pictures, unlikely it's an original engine. But that takes some pressure off. You can (hopefully) get it running and see if you're a 911 guy.
Enjoy. |
