1984 Porsche 911 Coupe - $16700
No affiliation.
Perusing craigslist and saw this midnight blue, 1984 Carrera Coupe for sale in the DC area at a reasonable price: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/4330115367.html ![]() Driver quality cosmetics and later turbo twist wheels, but looks like a decent car from the CL low quality pics. Very nice seats, and presentable exterior, but cracked dash and missing some bits. Lots of performance oriented upgrades, including an engine rebuild. Mileage unlisted due to broken odometer. Fairly priced for someone who is looking for low risk, entry level car they can drive and sort over time.

I've seen that car for sale for a really long time. And I thought about making the drive with cash.
Never contacted the seller. I got turned off by the length the car has been on the market. Perhaps it's a hidden jewel. The last of the warriors, who knows…….

Any time I read 'odometer just stopped working' I tend to run for the hills. How long ago would you define as 'just'? Of course, I didn't see the mileage listed anyway.
This ad also tripped one of my pet peeves which is the need to add adjectives / descriptors such as 'collectible' to describe cars that are neither in great condition nor original. The one that sets me over the top is when folks list 100k mile cars as 'mint' or 'time capsules'. I don't care how well the car has been cared for, it ain't gonna be either of those at 100k miles. Sorry for the rant. |

He is also pretty straightforward about the condition, and makes no claims about it being "mint" or "glossy". He could make his job easier with better pictures and more details. But if he was a pro at advertising, he'd be asking more money. The car is definitely rough around the edges. But that is what you get for $15-17k in a 3.2 Carrera coupe, and a rebuilt engine, other nice mechanical upgrades, and clean interior are usually not present on those cars. Sorting it out the rest will cost money -- but it seems like a good choice if you want a drivable project and can't afford a $25k car.

I'm still wondering why hasn't sold. (trash or treasure) I've been burned a couple of times talking to owners, making offers, driving and just finding pure Junk. Best line ever.

And unlike most mods, you can actually sell the turbo twists to offset the cost of sourcing genuine Fuchs. If you take your time and have easy access to a big market (i.e., don't have to pay shipping both ways), you can probably swap them out for a net of $500-700. Like I said, if it was correct and sorted, it would be selling closer to $20k.

One possible reason it hasn't sold is that he took it off the market maybe four months ago when it didn't sell in the fall. Coldest, snowiest winter in No. Virginia in years probably isn't helping. But you are right that it could be a flaky seller, or that the car is much worse than described/depicted.

I don't think I could find a 993 for the same price/same condition today.

Looks like a fairly nice car to me, but one really never knows until you look.
I live very close and would be happy to take a look if you would like an unbiased opinion. Dave

or use the search function on the marketplace forum The irony is, depending on how bad they are curbed and the condition of the tires, the Turbo Twist wheels sell close to the same value as the Fuchs, so long as you are not looking for big sizes or perfect condition. The painted center caps on those are probably worth $90-120 by themselves.
