82 SC Targa Project

Just looking for comments/range ??

Thinking of putting my (ran out of time/patience) Targa Project on the Auction Block..here or ebay... This is very basic list, yes will have plenty of pictures of all when the time comes..

82 SC Targa Guards Red - Body in good shape no rust, some small bubbling around back window..bumpers off, but have all parts but bumperettes
Typical Upgrades, Turbo Tie Rod ends, rebulit steering rack, new a-arm bushings, rebuilt calipers, good brakes, newer HD Bilstiens up front and back, new sway-away TBs all around (20/27), all interior seats / carpet out, front seats have cracks, dash has not cracks, new shifter linkage, new momo steering wheel, no radio, but have the blaupunkt.
Engine out 78 3.0L 930/04 , so larger intakes, was running when it came out.. all parts, new alternator, new fuel distributor, newer injectors, CIS needs new boots, cleanup... brand new engine wiring harness from timmy2, wired for MSDS and have all parts, coil and box... ALL parts plus extras to put this back together or upgrade as buyer see fit... Wheels, have redone fuchs..7s/8s 16s.... but might keep these..depending on buyer's price..

So much more to list...just doing a quick survey..

Selling $$ range.... ????
BEFORE TEAR DOWN

Hard to judge much from a single picture. Especially given the description of the seats/interior.

What's the mileage? Assuming it is not crazy, or completely unknown -- and the interior and body are sound, and that little rust bubble is an anomaly, and all the gauges work, etc....

Total SWAG would be $15-17k.

I throw that out there because I think a car like yours is probably a $20-25k car if it were intact and driving, and you are going to take at least a five grand hit for it being a project -- albeit a pretty manageable one. That assumes it is inventoried, labeled, and neatly boxed - inspiring confidence that everything needed to reassembled is present.

It may be a bigger hit if the pieces are scattered about, or boxed up together without labels.

BTW -- given what you have posted, it seems well worth your while to spend a week of evenings and weekends and get it reassembled.

What happened to the original engine? How strong is the 78? State of the transmission?

I missed the engine swap in my first post -- that makes me a little more pessimistic. I can't help thinking that any prospective buyer is going to assume the worst about the engine & transmission unless you can demonstrate otherwise, and that starts getting you into parts car money.

I think you are looking at $13-15k in pieces -- because someone is probably willing to gamble they can reassemble & make a quick flip.

$18-22 if together, running well & driving.

Just no time, and have an 84 Race car to satisfy my wrench turning therapy...

Engine was in the car when I purchased several years ago.. I did some basic upgrades and it ran very strong.. Never discovered it was a 930/04 until I got wiser and started doing my own maintenance. On the year the CIS is also mechanical and does not have any electronics, even though 1982 year had the Lambda box.. As I said, the engine and trans ran great , no issues before I took them out.. I did a leak down test on the engine and saw numbers where I would perform a rebuild, at least top end. It would take a little doing, but most pieces could be grouped quite easy and I have kept most thing together.. I would replace hardware and obvious worn parts where needed. Not a difficult project, but not for a first timer either, I would say.. For the right person , shop, a pretty easy flip..

I wish you were right about the numbers.. first "non solicited" bite I got was HALF of this... Parts broker looking to steal it... haha

I think Mark Wemple's FS and What's it worth threads suggest Colb's numbers may be a little high. Mark's car is further apart and more racish but it also has a good engine. I think you will be lucky to get $10k. That starts to suggest selling engine and gearbox separate and selling as a roller.

Matt I agree with you, Wemple's car is still for sale and that suggest the ask may be on the high side. I think you are looking at 7-8k as a package a bit more if you part it out.

With reflection I agree I was too optimistic. Overly influenced by the picture of the car together.

If all that is required is reassembly, and the motor is not in pieces, it is hard to imagine it being worth less than 10k. But the logistics of buying a car in pieces are complicated.

How bad were the compression numbers?

Reinstalling the interior and motor would only be a long coupe of days work. Am I missing something? Is the wiring harness not installed? That sounds like a stack of work. ...

The engine only has the CIS, Alternator, Fan Housing, Engine cover, and tin removed.. it's in a long block state still.. Did a "leak down" instead...and 3 & 5 were showing +15% , hence at least a top end is in order.. I'm thinking exhaust valves, this was where the noise was.. Engine has all the typical upgrades.. tensioners, new alternator, MSD ignition, blow back valve , ect ect ect...

I have a "brand new" engine wiring harness , from timmy2 and wired for the MSD system... Harness from the fuse box back...all intact not touched..

One would have to see the project to understand.. for the right person.. Its a quick "put back together", with so many $$ upgrades.. Of course, the engine needs a rebuild and the tranny probably syncros and 2nd gear.. as typical...

Wheels are another issues... I have "redone" 7x16s & 8/18s and they are nice.. NOT INCLUDED unless the $$$ are right... We all know how much these are worth today..

You are leaving a lot of money on the table trying to sell a disassembled project, even if the time to complete is a couple of hours.
If it's really that quick a project, what is the possibility of hiring someone to complete the project.

The market is strong, so it might be smart to explore exactly what it will cost to complete it,
and then compare the higher price you can expect (low $20s), and see if it's worth it.

It's a tough call.... time, patience, other priorities...a Track Car that keeps me busy... However, my intention was to "just see" with these posts. I had not "completely" decided NOT to finish it..

Like everything else, how I want to finish it will take more (time/money) than just putting it back together.. I , personally, wanted to (repaint, widen, carb the engine, RS the interior) ect... Yes, I want my cake and eat it too! ... Yet, by the time I finish... with initial purchase 9 years ago, $$ spent on upgrades, and the above.. I'll surely have more money in it..then it's worth!! PLUS, I can't drive it NOW !! :-)

But,,, hear what you saying..In the end, putting it back together as original might just be the final answer.. Then, to your point, it's retains the value its due..and I haven't given it away as a project..

Makes sense...

You are commingling 2 different projects. Think of the car like a house. Are you going to flip it, or retire in it? If you're just going to sell it, then maybe stop treating it like a personal project. Get it back together, and be done with it. If you're going to keep it, only then think about doing those performance mods. What is it? A car to sell, or a project for a keeper? The answer dictates how you approach the reassembly.
