In what world is a 60k mile G50 Carrera "priced to sell" at $60k?

If turbos are 125k, then Carreras are a bargain at 60k.

Well..
Not trying to be smart, but it's worth what somebody is willing to pay. Good condition air cooled 911's are finally bringing respectable prices - they were in the gutter for many years, so I don't have a problem with mint examples bringing good money.
I'm not sure why pricing seems to upset many people, but I have to admit some recent pricing bothers me as well! I'm bothered by common variations of rusted out 356's (say a '61 "B") that bring money that I feel could never be recouped by a restoration - but that's for the buyer to deal with. No offense intended toward the 356 crowd, and they certainly are charming little cars that were very well built, that ooze quality and charm. To me a 911 is a much more "thoroughbred" vehicle with a magnificent engine. The 356 (less an exotic 4 cam or similar) lacks the magnificent engine, and that is the heart & soul of any car. $60k for a '75 911 mag case car would probably get me going a bit though (an '89, not so much). When I can buy a low mile, minty last year Carrera or a new boxter for the same price, I would probably take the mint old 911. My only regret is that with "mint" cars I feel the urge to keep the miles low and I would would not properly use it. I'm pretty happy with my high mile SC even though I'm sure I could sell it for a bit more than I paid for it a few years ago - what the heck could I buy in this price range that offers the same bang for the buck?? Winding out that flat 6 is quite the experience... |

A rising tide raises all ships.
Probably not that high, but raises them all nonetheless. Last edited by Nachtfalter; 07-25-2014 at 09:23 PM.. Reason: spelling |

I suspect they believe that the Anniversary edition status tacks on a hefty premium. I suspect they have overshot the mark here but only the market will tell.

I sell a lot of stuff, not necessarily automotive related. Sometimes I honestly don't know what it's worth but I know that it has value, so I over-price it a little and quickly adjust the price as reality sets in. Sometimes I am surprised and it's worth more than I thought.
I suspect that many Porsche sellers are doing the same thing in the hot market where values are changing quickly, (at least they were very recently). |

I still maintain that a high asking price deters folks from even considering the car. Not a "high normal" price with room for negotiation, but a super-optimistic high price, where folks might get the idea that if you're delusional on what the car's value is, you might also be delusional about what constitutes "regular maintenance" and "rust-free". |

In this world, there are low information buyers who overpay for cars simply because they don't know how to sort information and/or don't care about +/- $25K. I saw a '74 Carrera that was purchased long distance by just such a buyer a few weeks ago. Bought the car and then went on a trip to the other side of the world before it arrived. Car was wildly misrepresented. Not sure what the outcome was but people sometimes just swallow their losses and move on...

Seller is probably testing the market. If there aren't many compareables of sold "special edition" to go by, you have to start somewhere.
Over and over we continue to see examples of "what the market will bear". Sellers will continue this trend until the cars are no longer selling, and then the market will stabilize, or prices might even drop. Who knows? Just drive the damn things!
