I know the starter of the thread owns one, so do not take personal. But the 912 E has good and bad to me. I have owned 2 of these cars. Sold both of them.
Most of this you know, the good is a cheap VW engine easy to maintain. Good on gas, galvanized body, great look, kinda of a old long hood look. But the car is sooooo under powered it's almost scary. On the Chicago interstate ramps, I found myself better off in a Honda Civic 1.9 liter. Not to be smart, I find these cars to be a Porsche joke. There is a sub-culture for anything in this world, but these cars are not worth the 20k+ people want. Part of it is low volume of 2099? Only sold in the US for a reason, plus the engine must be left stock to pass CA emissions, that make the car slower....if you want to keep original and sell to the masses of Porsche buyers. I think any or most 912 cars not E is what to buy over this slow, pathetic example of a Porsche. |

I enjoyed my 912e but there's no way I would have kept the engine stock if it was a long term car. I would have done a 150hp Raby massIVe engine or 911 swap. It needs more powa!

As you know Matt Rabys "tune up" is not cheap! |
The old adage is,"Which part of racing did you think was going to be cheap?" I'm gonna change it to which part of owning a Porsche...
In all seriousness this is where DIY is essential. Part of why I have a spare type IV in the barn is to build a hot engine without using a numbers matching engine. The other part is even if the build takes a year, the car can still be enjoyed while the build is happening. Christian, you need a core 2.0 914 engine and an engine stand... |

Yikes - that's a bad paint job! They also got the exhaust pipe and didn't have time to take off the 912E badge - (or to color sand the car.)
But that's not too surprising- Syosset is the key word here - (LuxSport/Exotic Classics) |
^^^ It's really something that some people are so sloppy and lazy that they can't be bothered to mask things off properly and/or clean off over spray - disgusting workmanship right thar!

This just came up for sale. Nice color and the steels actuctually flatter the car. They were an option in 1975 if I recall correctly.
But look at the repaint. 45k euros come on! And my all original 912 has still not sold at 30k. |

And what happened to yours? How much did you get for it? |
Sorry,
https://m.mobile.de/auto-inserat/porsche-912-schuifdak-beveren/222262491.html I still have mine. An Italian and a German has looked at it but the original "worn" paint put them off. Neither of them were Porsche people though. I bet it would have sold if it had a cheap respray - but I would never do that to Bee. He is what he is! https://m.mobile.de/auto-inserat/porsche-912-e-kopenhagen/214121455.html |
I've had a few E's and its not the lack of power its the sound of the engine that made me tire and sell them. A car that looks that good should not sound like an old vw camper van
|
Check this out - a rare pic of Christian taking his Bee to its top speed (max attainable RPM on the .5 degree hill he was climbing, too)!!!

The speedometer on the E only goes to 150 (not taken it to there yet myself though) and my camera lens does not have all those fluid stains as shown in the picture. Funny, I always took you for the wooden Nardi wheel and leather gloves kind of guy. |
