You can bet the scam will succeed many times over. I've been amazed to read how many Pelican members have been did by the same type scam in the past couple of years, and those are just the ones not too proud to post about it!

The best way is to have someone local to inspect and use paypal or US Postal Money order, then if they rip you off, it's mail fraud....

I still don't quite understand how these scams work. Do they ask for a "deposit" to hold the car and then disappear?

That's one way they score, but the scammer gets an even bigger payday when too-trusting people actually pay for the car thinking that it will then be shipped to them.

One of the main things that is important to do is to actually verify that the car exists (using someone/some agency that is totally independent of the seller).

One guy that had a long thread about a scam he was victim of thought he had verified the car's existence, but the problem was that the person verifying was recommended by the seller and was part of the scam - the buyer even talked to this person on the phone, but it all turned out to be a lie/scam, and the car was never even in the seller's possession.

Generally these guys are out of the country on business but to make you feel totally secure, they will ship the car to you and all you have to do is send the money to an online escrow service that they have used in the past. If you don't like the car after you get it, you get your money back and the seller is happy to pay for return shipping.

Of course the online escrow service has a very official sounding name and a pretty nice website so wiring them the money seems safe. Once the escrow service has your money, it is gone.

The other alternative as previously mentioned is just wiring a $100-$500 deposit to hold the car. After they collect the money you never hear from them again.

Having them take a picture of the car with a hand written sign that says "I hate scammers" is one way to at least prove they have the car (unless they are really good at photoshop).

Got the photos but the car was worse then I expected so did not buy it
